Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourvèdre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel. Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston. The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourvèdre. This is definitely a Grenache-driven GSM! Subtle seasoned oak and caramel lead to a deep-fruited, dark cherry and strawberry palate with supple fine-grain tannin. Gentle refreshing acidity gives great line and drives the brooding and delicious fruit through to a lingering finish. (262783-2)

Wattle Park Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot 2015 (6 x 750mL) Adelaide HillsThis exquisite wine shows a bouquet of lifted cassis, violets, and blueberry, with hints of black cherry, bramble and subtle spicy oak. With the palate delivering blackberry, morello cherry, and savoury red plum, complemented by notes of red capsicum and toasted French oak. The outstanding 2015 vintage guaranteed slow ripening and distinctive varietal character for the late Petit Verdot and the robust Shiraz. We believe these two varieties complement each other perfectly. We selected Petit Verdot from the OTC, Siberia, Jones and Katunga vineyards, with the Shiraz parcels from the Bellevue, Johnston Prolific, Katunga and Stubble Quail blocks. (266132-2)

Composition

Merlot 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 42%, Cabernet Franc 6% Winemaking The grapes were harvested from the respective vineyards and transported to our Riverview winery were they were crushed to open topped stainless steel fermentation vessels and inoculated with a range of yeast strains. The ferments were pumped over several times per day until dry and then allowed from 2 to 5 days extended maceration. The wine was then pressed off the skins and some was put to barrel where it was aged for 12 months before blending with components which had been matured in stainless steel. The wine was then transported by road tanker to our Katikati winery for final blending and finishing. Bottling was in November2018. (266247-4)

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (265704-3)

Southern Cross Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabernet 2014 (12 x 750mL) NZThis wine shows aromas of mint and violets along with blackcurrent and developed characters of cedar and chocolate. On the palate dark plums and blackcurrant with the fine toasty oak used to mature the wine being evident in the finish. (266247-2)

Winemaking

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Vintage Conditions

Weather conditions were mild during summer, with a few short periods of hot weather. Generally, conditions during the majority of the ripening period were ideal, with mild day time temperatures and cold nights, all conducive to excellent flavour development and the retention of natural acidity in the fruit. A great vintage! Winemaking Picked in the cool of the morning and open top fermented. Hand plunged 3-4 times a day to extract rich colour and a complex mid-palate. Matured for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Penthouse Wines is a collaboration between John Crossland of the Central Coast of California, and Randal Tomich of South Australia. Their winemaking partnership is world class. All wines are made in the vineyard. Their vineyard management and vineyard construction techniques are unrivalled and employed by leading wineries such at Robert Mondavi, Silver Oak and Ta Kalon Vineyard Napa. (266642-1)

Pirramimma Gilded Lilly Grenache 2014 (12 x 750mL) SAThe excellent 2014 vintage was ideal for this fruit driven Grenache. The wine displays a lifted bouquet of pomegranate, spicy red currant and cranberry, complemented by blueberry/Floral notes. With the palate delivering sweet raspberry, toffee apple, spicy plum notes, with hints of morello cherry and rosewater, enhanced by subtle vanilla oak. This fruit driven wine is ready for immediate drinking or will develop with the right cellaring. (265612-3)

This wine continues my love affair with this blend. It has a solid backbone of ripe McLaren Vale Grenache and it captures the essence of the winemaker’s craft. 2013 produced big robust wines that carry lots of oak complexity and lovely scented spice. This dry red is made from premium varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness to create this rich, full bodied wine. Vintage

The fruit was harvested during the cool of night to obtain a variety of fruit flavours ranging from grassy to tropical. The juice was cool fermneted in stainless steel with aromatic yeast strains. This wine was bottles early to retain fresh fruit characters. (267718-2)

For this elegant medium weighted GSM, we selected Grenache from our1944 “Prisoner of War” block, the Shiraz from our “Katunga” vineyard and Mourvèdre from the “War Horse” site. We used 600 Litre Puncheons for the Grenache component and older French oak for the Shiraz and Mourvèdre to maintain varietal perfume. (267645-3)

The palate if full of plum and blackberry fruits from the Shiraz and seductive sweet cassis from the Cabernet, which all sits on a bed of dark spices and rounded velvety tannins. (267146-1)
