Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0036-2480548

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (267920-10)

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2480548

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Village Botanist Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL) Currency Creek, SA

Lot No: 0042-2480476

Grown in Currency Creek, South Australia, this wine shows characters of red berries, white pepper and spice with chocolate and vanilla oak notes. Picked during March 2016 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around five days, following pressing the wine was aged in a mixture of French and American oak barrels to develop complexity. The Village Botanist range of wines is a celebration of the pull to make artisan wine. Crafted by Vanessa Altmann. The progressive winemaker has made wine for seventeen years throughout regions of South Australia including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. With a focus on sustainable and organic winemaking, Vanessa began fermenting small batch wines under the label Switch Wine during 2010. The Village Botanist range is an extension of this winemaking philosophy and style.During vintage you’ll find us with buckets at the ready, thrown towards friends and enjoying long picnic lunches amongst the vines. We seek organically grown parcels of fruit and working closely with growers and friends is all part of how we like to make wine. We live by the ethos that outstanding wines come not only from great vineyards, but from people who love what they do.These are small batch wines, sometimes made in quantities as limited as 100 cases. Our aim is to offer these wines in a different way direct from the winemaker to the wine drinker. (267438-2)

Summerton Gold Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0037-2480476

The grapes were crushed and fermented on skins under controlled temperatures for twelve to fifteen days, to extract deep colour, fruit flavours and fullness of structure with a softened astringency. The fermenting wine was drained and gently pressed from skins. New American oak hogsheads and new French oak puncheons were used in combination with some 2 and 3 year oak barriques to mature the wine for 8 months. Only around 30% of the wine was aged in oak to ensure that the oak flavours remained in the background and individual barrel selection ensured that only the best wine found its’ way into the final blend. Vintage Conditions The fruit for this typically opulent Barossa Shiraz was harvested within the range of 13.5 to 14.5 Baume, once it had developed a full intensity and complexity of flavours, embodied by a full rounded tannic structure and classic mulberry fruit character. In keeping with Salena Estate Wines house style, this wine was made to exhibit intense fruit with well integrated oak in the background. (267687-4)

Vintage Conditions

Sourced entirely from Company-owned vineyard estates, the condition of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes received at the crusher was exceptional. Most notable were the array of flavours and mouth puckering fruit tannins. About This Wine The quality of the fruit lent itself to extended skin contact for optimum extraction of colour, so after crushing the fruit was fermented on skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel for between ten and twelve days. The depth of fruit flavour and bold tannin structure achieved meant that from the beginning this wine was built to last. Fermentation was completed in an assortment of oak and stainless steel, with French and American oak staves, hogshead and barriques used. Some individual parcels of wine remained in wood for up to 18 months, with some parcels aged with the judicious use of specially toasted oak staves. The winemaking process was completed with the assessment and grading of all the separate components before assemblage of the final blends. (267687-7)

Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2013 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River

Lot No: 0038-2480490

Vintage

Following the driest July ever recorded in the South West, early spring conditions saw excellent budbreak and steady vine growth, as frequent rainfall events ensured good soil moisture prior to flowering. Late November brought thunderstorms and extreme winds to the region which resulted in reduced yields across most varieties - particularly Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon which were reduced by around 30%. The summer was very warm and dry with some bursts of heat during late December which advanced the development of the fruit. With warm and dry conditions continuing into February, many blocks reached optimal flavour at the same time, resulting in a very compressed harvest period for the whites. Our first harvest of Chardonnay was on the 6th of February which is nearly 10 days earlier than our long term average. Our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot fruit was harvested during late March and early April which is quite typical for these varieties. All of the fruit was harvested in pristine condition with great vibrancy and excellent flavour profiles ensuring 2013 will produce another excellent crop of wines. Vineyard Voyager Estate Girt by Sea is produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes sourced from our North Block and Weightmans vineyards. The gentle rolling gravelly hills provide the perfect soils for growing vines with excellent natural balance and moderate yields. All of our vineyards are managed following a sustainable and natural approach to viticulture, with a focus on building a healthy and resilient vineyard through the use of natural products and the encouragement of bio diversity. There is also a component of Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot utilised in this blend from two premium selected vineyards. The Estate vineyards are planted to four different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon which contribute slightly different fruit profiles to the final wine. The vines are all meticulously trained to a vertical shoot positioned canopy and are hand pruned, shoot thinned and green thinned prior to harvest. (264940-3)
