Jim Barry `The Cover Drive` Cabernet Sauvignon 2017(6 x 750mL), SA.

On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Soon after Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from our family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable.

Guigal `Cotes du Rhone` Blanc 2017 (12 x 750mL), France.

Grape variety

60% Viognier, 15% Roussanne, 10% Marsanne, 8 % Clairette, 5% Bourboulenc, 2% Grenache blanc. Our comment Loyal followers of the GUIGAL Cötes-du-Rhöne will enjoy this wine which flatters as much as its famous red cousin! Vineyard Soils: Plantings that go into this wine are on varied soils, primarily sedimentary, limestone and granite.Farming: Guigal produces an almost completely distinct Cotes du Rhone Blanc due to their Northern Rhone mindset. Wines under this general appellation are dominated by Southern Rhone grapes such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc. Since 1991, the Guigals have searched for and encouraged plantings of Viognier for their Cotes du Rhone Blanc, as they believe it adds critical freshness and aromatics to the other varieties. Winemaking Fermentation: Handled at low temperatures and then fermented 100% in stainless steel.Aging: 9 months after harvest Estate The more you learn about the Guigal family, the more astounding becomes their story. Their wines are the benchmarks for every Rhone appellation, and over the last thirty years they have become arguably the most lauded producer in the world. Year after year the Guigal family produces wines of exceptional quality that in all classes offer exceptional value.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Yalumba `Y Series` Sangiovese Rosé 2019 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Winemaker Comments

Firstly, the fruit is sourced from two blocks in the Barossa Valley. Tony Brooks’ Gomersal vineyard, planted on rich, red brown earth over limestone gives the wine depth and length. Kevin Burgemeister’s Penrice vineyard sits on brown, sandy loam giving the wine perfume and freshness. The second region is the Riverland, this adds brightness and vibrancy to the wine. Finally our Wrattonbully vineyards, from Terra Rossa country, red sandy loam over limestone, gives the wine a powerful depth of flavour coupled with a mineral texture.Once picked, the grapes are crushed and left in contact with their skins for between one and three hours to obtain the desired colour. The juice is then run off the skins into a stainless steel tank to undergo wild fermentation. At Yalumba we believe that one good wine leads to another. The Y Series was created with that belief in mind. The Y Series is a collection of iconic classics and exciting new varietals. Each authentically crafted with fruit from South Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. We look forward to sharing our love of wine with you as you explore the Y Series.

Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

First Release Malbec 2017 (6 x 750mL) Langhorne Creek, SA

Lot No: 0023-2487127

Vinification

One row of vines was isolated from our estate vines in Langhorne Creek. Only French oak was used to allow the Malbec fruit to have its full expression. Extended maceration helped to accentuate the depth of colour and aroma. 2017 Vintage The Langhorne Creek wine region experienced a long, slow vintage in 2017, beginning with high winter and spring rainfall leading into an extended, cool ripening phase. Reminiscent of long-past vintages, the grape harvest for 2017 kicked off a good two weeks later than the previous year in Langhorne Creek, with reds not hitting their stride until late March. Malbec thrived in this vintage due to the long, cool ripening period.Heartland is the place between the vines with the best view of the gum trees. Our Malbec is the first classic wine we release from every vintage, often up to 2 years before the rest of our range. This helps to showcase the freshness and primary fruit flavours that make this variety so enjoyable. (270628-2)

VINTAGE CONDITIONS The fruit for this wine was sourced from our vineyards in South Eastern Australia. The climate is hot with high evaporation rates and generally low rainfall, making irrigation essential. The climate is also continental, resulting in long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights. Long sunshine hours ensure fruit ripens fully and low relative humidity results in little incidence of disease. WINEMAKING This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, full-flavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from our various dry and irrigated vineyards and was harvested at night. The grapes were fermented at cool temperatures for a period of 5-7 days. This allows the fruit flavours to be nurtured and entables retention of varietal characteristics. Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0016-2487127

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (271633-3)
