Ashbrook Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

A delicious wine to drink with or without food. The nose is loaded with tropical and passion fruits, which follow through onto the palate. Delicious fruit sweetness balanced by focused acidity and freshness makes this a very moreish wine. The grapes for this unwooded style are picked slightly riper than most in order to eliminate green characters and maximize the flavours of the tropical fruit spectrum and to give the wine greater palate weight and length.

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Voyager Estate Project Rose 2018 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0048-2484650

Vintage

Following several years of early vintages and the exceptionally late 2017, it was very nice to have a 'normal' season again. Excellent budburst across all varieties was followed by a beautifully warm November, which provided ideal conditions for flowering and very good fruit set. Summer proved to be quite mild with just a few hot days, particularly in December, which was also one of the wettest recorded. Cool, dry conditions in the lead-up to harvest enabled fruit to ripen slowly, accumulating intense varietal flavours whilst retaining natural acidity and our whites were all harvested in excellent condition. The warmer March weather saw the reds ripen beautifully and they were harvested under clear, sunny skies through March and early April with ripe, concentrated flavours and excellent fine-grained powdery tannins. Vineyard The two key Shiraz vineyards which contributed to this wine are planted to different clones. Ullingers Block 8 is planted to 12SBVRC clone and gives earthy, savoury notes to the wine while Weightmans Block 3, planted to the PT15 clone, offers a brighter, fresh berry component. A small percentage of Merlot is also utilised for its fresh berry and dried herb characters as well as Sauvignon Blanc, which provides fresh aromatic lift. All these Estate vineyards are planted on the classic gravelly, stony soils for which the region is famous - producing balanced vines with moderate yields. (270471-3)

Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Vintage

Following one of the coldest and wettest winters on record, a cooler than average growing season commenced later than normal with bud burst in mid September. Overall the summer was cooler than average, however a nice November and early December saw sunshine and warmer weather provide perfect conditions for flowering which resulted in excellent fruit set. Observing the lateness of the season and and the potentially high yields, the vineyard team commenced an extensive crop thinning program in January, pre-véraison. Late summer and early autumn were also slightly cooler and wetter than average, resulting in a delayed start to harvest. Our first harvest for the vintage was Chardonnay which was handpicked on 28 February, some three weeks later than a "normal" season. Chardonnay was steadily harvested during the first two weeks in March. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chenin Blanc followed immediately afterwards and, all of the fruit reaped the benefits of the cooler season, showing excellent concentration of flavours with nicely balanced acidity. The vines appreciated the milder ripening weather with no excessive heat, allowing intense varietal characters to develop with excellent freshness, vibrancy and purity. Vineyard The fruit for our 2017 Chenin Blanc is sourced from two Estate vineyard blocks. The main vineyard contributing to the wine is Weightmans Block 1 which displays excellent early flavour development ensuring good natural acidity. The vineyard soils are typically gravelly loams with a stony clay subsoil with excellent drainage and good moisture holding capacity, producing vines with exceptional balance. All the vines are carefully hand-pruned, shoot thinned and are cultivated to a target yield of ten tonnes per hectare. (270471-1)

E. McDougall & Co Cabernets 2016 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0008-2484601

A picture perfect ripening season leads to wonderfully ripe tannins and flavours across all the varietals; Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon. All varietals were de-stemmed and pumped into stainless steel fermenters. Fermentation was induced with selected Bordeaux favoured yeast strains, and the must was pumped over twice daily to extract the perfect amount of tannins, colour, and aromas. Fermentation of all batches occurred over a 14-18 day process with parcels then pressed off into barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation for the next 18 months. Fining was limited as was the addition of sulphur dioxide. After 14 months, the wines were racked, blended, and returned to barrel for integration. Once maturation was completed the wines were bottled via sterile filtration membrane. (270801-1)

Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2015 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River

Lot No: 0053-2484601

Vintage

The region experienced quite a challenging growing season due to some variable weather conditions. An unseasonably warm end to the winter period led to early bud burst across all varieties which was followed by a cooler and windier than normal spring, resulting in natural yield reduction. Consistently warm conditions during the summer assisted with excellent early tannin ripeness in the reds whilst allowing time for balanced flavour development. Yields were 20 to 30% below average across all varieties which allowed the fruit to move through flavour profiles quite rapidly and harvest timing was critical to ensure the fruit was captured at peak varietal expression. Voyager Estate is delighted with the wines from the season. Despite the more challenging season experienced, the consistent quality that is the hallmark of Voyager Estate and Margaret River is once again outstanding. Vineyard The Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot is produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, sourced from our sustainably farmed North Block and Weightmans vineyards, located near the coast in the Wallcliffe sub-region in Margaret River. The gentle rolling, gravelly hills provide the perfect soils and microclimates for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, producing vines with excellent natural balance and moderate yields. The Estate vineyards are planted with four different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, which contribute slightly different fruit profiles to the final wine. The vines are all meticulously trained to a vertical shoot positioned canopy and are hand-pruned, shoot-thinned and green thinned prior to harvest. (270471-4)

The Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are planted mainly to Clone 1, which is perfect for this style of wine, offering crunchy, lifted tropical fruit aromas and flavours. The Semillon contributes strong citrus elements, and provides palate weight and structure to the wine. The Semillon component was sourced from our North Block 10 vineyard which was planted in 1995. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding fruit with great flavour intensity. All the vines are hand-pruned, shoot-thinned and yields are regulated to a target of ten tonnes per hectare, which ensures consistency from season to season. (270471-2)
