Ashbrook Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

A delicious wine to drink with or without food. The nose is loaded with tropical and passion fruits, which follow through onto the palate. Delicious fruit sweetness balanced by focused acidity and freshness makes this a very moreish wine. The grapes for this unwooded style are picked slightly riper than most in order to eliminate green characters and maximize the flavours of the tropical fruit spectrum and to give the wine greater palate weight and length.

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2017 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0052-2484673

Vintage

Following one of the coldest and wettest winters on record, a cooler than average growing season commenced later than normal with bud burst in mid September. Overall the summer was cooler than average, however a nice November and early December saw sunshine and warmer weather provide perfect conditions for flowering which resulted in excellent fruit set. Observing the lateness of the season and and the potentially high yields, the vineyard team commenced an extensive crop thinning program in January, pre-véraison. Late summer and early autumn were also slightly cooler and wetter than average, resulting in a delayed start to harvest. Our first harvest for the vintage was Chardonnay which was handpicked on 28 February, some three weeks later than a "normal" season. Chardonnay was steadily harvested during the first two weeks in March. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chenin Blanc followed immediately afterwards and, all of the fruit reaped the benefits of the cooler season, showing excellent concentration of flavours with nicely balanced acidity. The vines appreciated the milder ripening weather with no excessive heat, allowing intense varietal characters to develop with excellent freshness, vibrancy and purity. Vineyard The fruit for our 2017 Chenin Blanc is sourced from two Estate vineyard blocks. The main vineyard contributing to the wine is Weightmans Block 1 which displays excellent early flavour development ensuring good natural acidity. The vineyard soils are typically gravelly loams with a stony clay subsoil with excellent drainage and good moisture holding capacity, producing vines with exceptional balance. All the vines are carefully hand-pruned, shoot thinned and are cultivated to a target yield of ten tonnes per hectare. (270471-1)

Silex Riesling 2018 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0048-2484673

MATURATION

Fermentation in stainless steel was quickly followed by bottling to retain freshness. WINEMAKERS NOTES The Silex vineyard is located at Kongorong, some 80 kilometres South of Coonawarra. The community has been famous for quite some time for its cheddar cheese. It also has a small and very specialized grapegrowing community. Its proximity to the Southern Ocean and the cold afternoon/evening sea breezes which seem to blow most days during the growing season make it one of the coolest places in Australia to grow grapes. This coolness results in a slow extended ripening period delivering high natural acidity and delicate fruit characters. Silex is a term used in Europe to describe flint or chert rock. The weathered limestone at this site has an extremely hard flint-like cap with a shallow layer of red clay loam. This and the weather make viticulture a real challenge. The 2018 vintage was very early but harvesting was delay just long enough to lower extremely high acid levels so that a balanced wine was achieved without a large amount of residual sugar being left in the wine. Typical cool climate delicate fruit characters were still captured.Time in the bottle will see the yeastiness fade more into the background and the lime and apple characters will become more obvious. Toasty bottle age will add complexity if you can resist the temptation for 3 to 5 years in the cellar. (270334-5)

Byrne Old Vine Zibibbo 2019 (6 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0009-2484673

Winemaking

The old vines of the Zibibbo are from our single vineyard; grown on ancient sheet limestone with red desert sand overlay and planted on our estate in the 1970s. Vintage 2019 saw hot, dry conditions which resulted in lower than average yields and with careful tendering produced this zesty wine. The concentrated flavours is evident in the grapes that were selected for their ripeness and acid balance for its first release. The low yielding fruit was gently pressed, cold settled and racked into ferment. A portion was influenced by seasoned French oak. The majority was tank fermented to retain varietal freshness. The zippy flavours and rich textures were woven together, resulting in medium to full-bodied white wine of complexity, layered with intriguing characters for a well balanced and lingering palate.Byrne Family Australia wines express our family’s dedication to the land and our vines. Salena Estate is a family-owned company making premium wines that redefine the standards for quality and value. At Salena Estate, the old winemaker’s maxim that “great wine is made in the vineyard” is taken to heart. To consistently achieve the highest quality fruit, the latest pruning, canopy management and other vineyard practices are undertaken to ensure optimum varietal expression from each and every harvest. With significant vineyard plantings of 208 hectares (520 acres), varieties grown at Salena Estate include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay, Colombard, Semillon and Riesling. Currently 100 hectares (250 acres) of Salena Estates vineyards are certified organic. As a core element of our philosophy, Salena Estate endeavours to employ a “minimal intervention” approach to weed and pest control. In fact, such is the winery’s commitment to the environment that all vineyard management regimes will soon be in line with organic practices.Fruit is harvested in the cool of the morning, when the grapes are in peak condition, before being quickly transferred to our modern winery, which is just minutes away on the same property. Coola Road Riesling 2018 (12 x 750mL) Mt Gambier, SA

Coola Road Riesling 2018 (12 x 750mL) Mt Gambier, SA

Lot No: 0014-2484673

Coola Road Riesling 2018 (12 x 750mL) Mt Gambier, SAThe rewards from the unique minerality found in this vineyard’s soils and its proximity to the southern ocean are aplenty in this Riesling. A beautifully balanced wine with a palate of lime and citrus pith and a stunning nose of green apple. With mind blowing acidity, it is drinking beau fully now, but could easily go another decade in a good cellar. (267094-3)
