Tripelpunkt Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Eden Valley

Lot No: 0017-2470682

This is our point-of-difference Riesling! In physics, the triple point is the thermodynamic conditions where a substance can exist in its solid, liquid and gaseous phases simultaneously. Our quest is for the oft-elusive triumvirate of Riesling, namely precision, texture and balance. - Three old vine Riesling vineyards feature here with two of them being dry grown. Vine age varies from 22 years to 60+ years. The vineyards are spread from the north (Moculta) to the central (Flaxman Valley) to the south (Springton) of the Eden Valley in order to incorporate all the key geological features of this long sub-region. Being dry grown and effectively organically managed, there is great diversity in terms of both ripeness levels and sun exposure at the time of picking, leading to this wine's tell-tale complexity and wonderful pattern of ageing. Vinification - The main distinction here is the hand-picking combined with a lengthy whole-bunch press cycle (9 hours) wherein gentle skin contact encourages phenolic body. Cold fermented on solids in a temperature controlled inox fermenter using a combination of indiginous and selected yeasts to develop and protect delicate aromas. The ferment is chilled prior to sugar dryness in order to maintain a small (4.4g/L) amount of residual grape sugar. As a stylistic choice, we do not use any fining throughout the winemaking process and only minimum SO2 is added prior to bottling. (255940-7)

Not Your Grandma's Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Eden Valley

Lot No: 0010-2470682

This is the Riesling Zeitgeist. Grandma drank sweet "Riesling" from a box… now real riesling is back! From the pristine Eden Valley, home of Australia's finest Riesling. The goal with this wine is to show off the virtues of classic Eden Valley Riesling to fanatical Riesling lovers and the Riesling uninitiated. It demonstrates our preferred dry and zesty style of Riesling with fruit and acidity in perfect balance. Viticulture - Michael Noack's vineyard is just outside of the township of Springton in the southern Eden Valley. The Riesling vines were planted in 1973 on an ideal east-facing aspect that benefits from the prevailing breeze that helps to keep this vineyard fresh and disease free. The vineyard is planted in low-nutrient well-draining soils largely composed of quartz gravel. This geology in the southern end of the Eden Valley lends itself to the tell-tale Eden Valley Riesling steely minerality and delicate florals. Vineyard GPS coordinates: 34°42'06.5"S 139°05'03.4"E Vinification - Machine harvested for a few hours of intentional skin contact to build phenolic body. Cold fermented in a temperature controlled inox fermenter using a combination of indiginous and selected yeasts to develop and protect delicate aromas. As a stylistic choice, we do not use any fining throughout the winemaking process and only minimal SO2 is added prior to bottling. (255940-1)

House of Plantagenet `Angevin` Riesling 2017 (12 x 750mL), Mount Barker, WA

Fruit was machine harvested at night when coolest and transferred to the winery to be immediately destemmed and crushed into the press, thus preserving freshness. The must was gently pressed to tank with a careful press cut made separating free run and pressings. The wine was settled and the clear juice racked to tank for a cool fermentation with an inoculated yeast strain. The wine was fermented to complete dryness, then rack from its lees and blended before fining, stabilisation and early bottling to preserve freshness.

Giesen Riesling 2015 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough, New Zealand.

Vineyard Region

Blended from cool-climate vineyards throughout Marlborough, Waipara and Nelson.

Winemaking

After pressing and settling for 36 hours the clear juice was fermented in separate vineyard batches mostly at cool temperatures. The ferments were all clean and steady with some great spice and exotic tropical aromas being expressed. We stopped the ferments when the crucial acid/sugar/alcohol balance was reached. The wine was blended and kept on light lees until bottling in May 2016.

Vintage Conditions

A cooler than usual start to the growing season soon gave way to typical hot, dry conditions with no rain. This resulted in small berry size with high concentration of flavour, which was all picked at optimal ripeness in excellent condition.

Hutton Vale Riesling 2017 (6 x 750mL), Eden Valley. SA.

Colin Angas was quick to realise the potential for the Eden Valley to be an exceptional region for Riesling, and planted a vineyard on gentle slope in the 1960’s. Whilst considered a single vineyard, there are two distinct sections. The top section planted on the leanest soils and more exposed to the wind produces very tightly structured fruit with crisp, vibrant acidity. The bottom section, on deeper, more vigorous red soils produces plumper bunches of fruit that showcases more fresh aromatics and citrus zing.

West Cape Howe Regional Range Riesling 2018 (12 x 750mL), Mt Barker, WA.

The 2018 vintage was arguably one of the best in years. With no extreme weather events, no disease pressure and consistently fine conditions throughout, it was a vintage most winemakers would love to ‘dial up’ every year! This Riesling is harvested at night from our preferred Block 6 at Langton and so only has to travel a few metres to the crushing deck. The fruit arrived at the winery at less than 12 C; only the free run juice was used and it was fermented at 12 - 15 C, ensuring all the inherent delicacy in this variety was retained.

Langi Riesling is selectively hand harvested from our Langi Old Block Riesling vines planted in 1975 at Mount Langi Ghiran. The site’s cool climate, together with granite sands and minimal irrigation, delivers grapes with great purity and stunning natural acidity. A small section of 15 panels across 15 rows at the southern crest of the block was selectively hand-harvested in order to capture their flavour intensity and razor-fine acidity. As a result, we are able to create wines with great energy and depth, and with superb cellaring potential. A cool, clean ferment with neutral yeast allows the varietal character and vineyard expression to shine. Kilikanoon Mort's Reserve Riesling 2015 (6 x 750mL), Clare Valley, SA.

Released as our finest Riesling cuveé of the vintage, the 2015 Mort’s Reserve was chosen from a single block on our famed Mort’s Block vineyard. Planted in 1970, it’s red loamy topsoil over the much deeper limestone base and east – west orientated rows are the perfect ingredients from which to craft this wine. The 2015 vintage proved to be an excellent one for Riesling. We carefully monitored flavour development and identified very early in the vintage which blocks were looking superior. The quality of the fruit almost enabled the wine to make itself. The cooler nights are instrumental in retaining high natural acidities, intense flavours and long ageing potentials.Showcasing the most distinguished of Kilikanoon’s terroir, Mort’s Reserve Riesling is a symphony of texture and complexity. We use only hand harvested fruit and free run juice, before a long and cool ferment; crafting the unequivocal essence of Kilikanoon.
