Not Your Grandma's Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Eden Valley

Not Your Grandma's Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Eden Valley

Lot No: 0010-2478145

This is the Riesling Zeitgeist. Grandma drank sweet "Riesling" from a box… now real riesling is back! From the pristine Eden Valley, home of Australia's finest Riesling. The goal with this wine is to show off the virtues of classic Eden Valley Riesling to fanatical Riesling lovers and the Riesling uninitiated. It demonstrates our preferred dry and zesty style of Riesling with fruit and acidity in perfect balance. Viticulture - Michael Noack's vineyard is just outside of the township of Springton in the southern Eden Valley. The Riesling vines were planted in 1973 on an ideal east-facing aspect that benefits from the prevailing breeze that helps to keep this vineyard fresh and disease free. The vineyard is planted in low-nutrient well-draining soils largely composed of quartz gravel. This geology in the southern end of the Eden Valley lends itself to the tell-tale Eden Valley Riesling steely minerality and delicate florals. Vineyard GPS coordinates: 34°42'06.5"S 139°05'03.4"E Vinification - Machine harvested for a few hours of intentional skin contact to build phenolic body. Cold fermented in a temperature controlled inox fermenter using a combination of indiginous and selected yeasts to develop and protect delicate aromas. As a stylistic choice, we do not use any fining throughout the winemaking process and only minimal SO2 is added prior to bottling. (259204-1)

Tertini International Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Hilltops, NSW

Tertini International Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Hilltops, NSW

Lot No: 0017-2478145

The fruit for this wine was grown especially for Tertini Wines in the Hilltops region of New South Wales. The vineyard is situated on a rolling hillside near Young at an altitude of 550m and has rich red volcanic soils. This vineyard has warmer days to ripen our Riesling and cool nights to ensure our fruit is grown with the richness, aromatic development and balance that this region is renowned for. Vintage & Winemaking Notes - An early budburst and early strong growth was followed by warm temperatures through late Spring and early Summer resulting in an excellent flowering and fruit set. A dryer than usual Spring/Summer led to perfect ripening conditions post veraison, therefore disease pressures were low and excellent clean fruit was harvested across all varieties. The winter rains from 2014 ensured a healthy crop load with intense varietal character but with moderate acidity. (266765-1)

A real insider’s wine, or another Best Kept Secret, Great Western Riesling is aromatic and flavoursome yet structured and spectacularly age-worthy. Best's Rieslings stand confidently alongside their acclaimed South Australian cousins. The Great Western region lends itself well to producing exceptional Rieslings – its diurnal weather patterns (warm days/cold nights) work well for this varietal. Some of our original nursery plantings can be traced back to Germany, so there's a significant history and pedigree in the root stock of Great Western Riesling.Grown on the sandy loams of the Concongella Creek and the Rhymney Vineyard sites, and occasionally from selected local vineyards, Best’s Riesling shows the intensity and finesse that are hallmarks of the Great Western region. The wine is made to show true varietal characteristics, achieved by letting the pristine fruit shine above all else. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, retaining the fruit’s inherent aromatics and acidity. Balance, texture and fruit flavour make for an accessible, food-friendly wine. And while made to drink now, it will definitely age for many years to come. We can testify that Best’s Great Western Rieslings from the 1970s are drinking superbly now. (262833-1)

Tripelpunkt Riesling 2016 (6 x 750mL) Eden Valley

Average rating 5 out of 5 stars
3 REVIEWS
Lot No: 0026-2478111

This is our point-of-difference Riesling! In physics, the triple point is the thermodynamic conditions where a substance can exist in its solid, liquid and gaseous phases simultaneously. Our quest is for the oft-elusive triumvirate of Riesling, namely precision, texture and balance. Viticulture - Three old vine Riesling vineyards feature here with two of them being dry grown. Vine age varies from 22 years to 60+ years. The vineyards are spread from the north (Moculta) to the central (Flaxman Valley) to the south (Springton) of the Eden Valley in order to incorporate all the key geological features of this long sub-region. Being dry grown and effectively organically managed, there is great diversity in terms of both ripeness levels and sun exposure at the time of picking, leading to this wine's tell-tale complexity and wonderful pattern of ageing. Vinification - The main distinction here is the hand-picking combined with a lengthy whole-bunch press cycle (9 hours) wherein gentle skin contact encourages phenolic body. Cold fermented on solids in a temperature controlled inox fermenter using a combination of indiginous and selected yeasts to develop and protect delicate aromas. The ferment is chilled prior to sugar dryness in order to maintain a small (4.4g/L) amount of residual grape sugar. As a stylistic choice, we do not use any fining throughout the winemaking process and only minimum SO2 is added prior to bottling. (259204-6)

Colin Angas was quick to realise the potential for the Eden Valley to be an exceptional region for Riesling, and planted a vineyard on gentle slope in the 1960’s. Whilst considered a single vineyard, there are two distinct sections. The top section planted on the leanest soils and more exposed to the wind produces very tightly structured fruit with crisp, vibrant acidity. The bottom section, on deeper, more vigorous red soils produces plumper bunches of fruit that showcases more fresh aromatics and citrus zing.
