Zilzie BTW Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0074-2482931

Winemaking

The fruit was harvested in the cool of night to preserve freshness and quality. Angove Groundswell Organic Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL) SA

Angove Groundswell Organic Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0001-2482919

Vineyard

The grapes for this wine were sourced from Angove’s own organically certified Nanya vineyard at Paringa and certified growers in McLaren Vale.Despite a relatively dry winter, budburst was even and the timing was about on par with previous years; however, the dry soil caused many growers to water the vines earlier than normal. With dry conditions comes lack of disease pressure allowing our vineyard team to minimise the use of any mildew sprays. Dry conditions continued into January, with above average temperatures and a four day stretch in mid-January of above 40 degrees. With good canopies and careful irrigation this did not do any damage to the fruit unlike previous years. Winemaking Picked in the cool of dawn the grapes as cold as possible the grapes were transported to the winery and pressed using modern membrane tank presses. The juice was then cold settled and carefully racked to cooled fermentation tanks where it was inoculated with selected yeasts. Temperature controlled fermentation was followed by a short period on oak prior to blending and bottling. (269699-1)

The increased desire of the wine industry to make better and more interesting Chardonnay has helped as well. Vinification Oxidative handling resulting in low phenolics and ultimately greater complexity. Saltbush Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Saltbush Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0034-2482871

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (269344-8)

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting (in order to retain freshness and varietal flavour) the grapes were crushed into airbag presses and gently pressed in top two fractions, free run and –pressings. Both fractions are fined to minimise any phenolic bitterness before being clarified. The free run is then inoculated with an aromatic yeast strain designed to enhance the varietal characters of the fruit as well as build texture in to the wine during fermentation. Controlled fermentation occurred over 10-12 days, commencing at 16°C and increasing toward the end of ferment to approximately 20°C. Post ferment the wine is stirred on lees to create texture and mid palate mouth feel. Once the palate of the wine is balanced between fresh acidity and texture the wine is clarified. Post clarification the wine was aged on French oak alternatives before being stabilised. The wine is then filtered and bottled. (268502-4)

VINTAGE NOTES

A relatively cool summer made for one of the best vintages for many years with harvest taking place weeks later than usual and the slower ripening providing more time for flavour development and more intensely flavoured grapes.WINEMAKINGThe grapes were machine harvested, crushed, destemmed and pressed into. Fermentation took place over 12 days with selected yeast to enhance both full flavour development and some complexity. The wine was kept on lees contact for a further 2 months before being racked and stabilized (protein and tartrate), carefully blended and prepared for bottling.
