Village Botanist Mataro 2018 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Village Botanist Mataro 2018 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0042-2480138

The Village Botanist range of wines is a celebration of the pull to make artisan wine. Crafted by Vanessa Altmann. The progressive winemaker has made wine for seventeen years throughout regions of South Australia including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. With a focus on sustainable and organic winemaking, Vanessa began fermenting small batch wines under the label Switch Wine during 2010. The Village Botanist range is an extension of this winemaking philosophy and style.During vintage you’ll find us with buckets at the ready, thrown towards friends and enjoying long picnic lunches amongst the vines. We seek organically grown parcels of fruit and working closely with growers and friends is all part of how we like to make wine. We live by the ethos that outstanding wines come not only from great vineyards, but from people who love what they do.These are small batch wines, sometimes made in quantities as limited as 100 cases. Our aim is to offer these wines in a different way direct from the winemaker to the wine drinker. (267438-1)

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0037-2480138

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (267920-10)

Penfolds Bin 138 GSM 2015 (6 x 750ml), Barossa, SA.

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak.Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

La Resistance! Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2015 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Average rating 2 out of 5 stars
1 REVIEW
Lot No: 0017-2480138

A vinous rematch of the famous 1811 BATTLE AT BARROSA RIDGE where Spain and France collided. La Re´sistance! takes up the fight for the traditional French varieties of the Barossa and pitches gnarly old vine GRENACHE, SYRAH & MOURVE`DRE into defence against the invading foreign marauders. Viticulture - Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourve`dre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel. Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston. The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourve`dre. (259204-4)

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2480138

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0007-2480138

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (265704-3)

Vintage detail

- Warm & dry conditions in December and January saw good fruit set and subsequent yields in some early varieties. February & March rainfall was high, and fruit ripening was slow for late ripening varieties. However, our free draining soil, vine management & selective harvesting ensured good quality in return.Harvested from our Gimblett Gravels vineyard. Tank fermented on skins with regular pumping over to extract good colour and optimum flavours. Matured in seasoned barriques and then blended to add fruit expression. (267895-4)
