Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.
Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Winemaking

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Winemaker:

Vanessa Altmann from Switch Organic Wine - Top 12 finalist in Young Gun of Wine 2017Grown in Langhorne Creek, South Australia this wine shows bright fruit characters of cherry and raspberry, with soft gentle tannins. The wine has a delicious texture that finishes with a hint of earth typical of the region, and while Merlot has often been used for blending this wine reminds me of some of the best Pinot’s I’ve tasted, an elegant example of Merlot as a varietal. Picked during March 2017 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was steeped in a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon skins for around four days to build complexity and palate weight, while still remaining true to Merlot style. Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0005-2476194

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (264168-3)

Les Celliers de Champsbilloux IGP Bouches de Rhone NV (6 x 750mL)

Les Celliers de Champsbilloux IGP Bouches de Rhone NV (6 x 750mL)

Lot No: 0034-2476105

Bouches-du-Rhone

is the IGP title for wines made in the administrative department of the same name on the southern coast of France. Bouches-du-Rhone lies within the Provence wine region, and is also home to the more-famous AOC regions Coteaux Aix-en-Provence and Les Baux de Provence. Because of the AOC’s restrictive laws and fierce loyalty to the traditional grape varieties, many of the IGP wines – which are made from a wider pool of grape varieties – are considered among the department’s best. The boundaries of Bouches-du-Rhone are mostly geographical: the Durance river delimits the north, while the Rhone river (flowing south from the Rhone Valley wine region) makes up a portion of the western border. A swampy wetland area known as the Carmargue lies in the very southwestern corner of the department, on the western side of the river. The Mediterranean makes up the southern border. The combination of climate and geography makes Bouches-du-Rhone well suited to viticulture and grapes have been grown here for thousands of years. While there is an array of different landscapes, from rocky limestone hills to vast plains, soils tend to be poor, free draining, and made up of anything from limestone clay to gravel and sandstone. A lack of water in the soils leads vines to produce more concentrated grapes, leading to more concentrated, flavourful wines. (263811-16)
