Winemaking

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Winemaker:

Vanessa Altmann from Switch Organic Wine - Top 12 finalist in Young Gun of Wine 2017Grown in Langhorne Creek, South Australia this wine shows bright fruit characters of cherry and raspberry, with soft gentle tannins. The wine has a delicious texture that finishes with a hint of earth typical of the region, and while Merlot has often been used for blending this wine reminds me of some of the best Pinot’s I’ve tasted, an elegant example of Merlot as a varietal. Picked during March 2017 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was steeped in a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon skins for around four days to build complexity and palate weight, while still remaining true to Merlot style. Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (262470-3)

Stoneleigh `Latitude` Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

The Stoneleigh Latitude range heralds from an area in Marlborough known as the 'Golden Mile'. This 'Golden Mile' is a fertile strip of land covered with ancient riverstones and is highly regarded for its outstanding grape-growing conditions. The resulting wines are aromatically lifted, as well as riper in spectrum, a result of higher concentration of the stones in the area and the effect these have on the vines.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Nova Vita `Firebird` Pinot Noir 2014 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Grape growing is not without its challenges with a brief burst of high heat early February and then significant tropical rain to break the heat creating a challenge. However, mild and sunny ripening weather in the last 4 weeks of veraison has produced grapes with fantastic fruit characters and excellent balanced acidity. Well developed canopies and below average yields provided the perfect environment for the harvesting of a full flavoured Pinot Noir. brioche. The palate is a mix of citrus (in particular lime), white stone fruits, fresh apples and raw almonds with a slightly creamy texture. Barrel fermentation has added some complexity and textural richness, which is balanced by crisp natural acidity.

- The grapes were hand harvested, fermented then gently pressed in our traditional basket press before oak barrel maturation. Cellaring - This Pinot Noir is beautiful to enjoy right now, however, if given careful cellaring, it will continue to evolve over the next 2-3 years as it matures. The South Island of New Zealand covers over 151,215km2 of rugged mountains, lakes, glaciers, ski fields and rivers. As proud guardians of the land our iconic vineyards are located in some of New Zealand's defining wine regions: Marlborough, Central Otago and the Waipara Valley. Each location has been selected with care and foresight; and as a result we aim to interfere as little as possible once the grapes arrive in the hands of the winemakers. Each vintage we create a portfolio of pure, expressive, balanced, vibrant and honest wines. The 2018 vintage started well with warm weather during flowering ensuring a well balanced crop. The following warm to hot summer meant for an early harvest for our Pinot Noir and it was a race to get the fruit off. The 2018 wines are approachable with a generous palate. OAK REGIME A portion of this wine was aged in French oak barriques, while the balance was matured in stainless steel to retain fruit character.
