Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Winemaking NotesThis wine is made primarily from fruit sourced from our “Melrose” vineyard, just over the river to the north from Spring Vale. The 2018 vintage has also been supplemented with fruit from our 6 hectares of young vines planted at Spring Vale over the last 5 years. This includes a portion of Pinot Meunier (approx. 3%) which contributes a subtle earthiness to the resulting wine. The bulk of the Melrose fruit parcels are inoculated by adding yeast as the berries are dispersed through the crusher/destemmer and this ensures a rapid onset of primary fermentation, our goal being to shorten the overall time on skins and avoid excessive tannin extraction for this lighter style Pinot Noir. We also co-inoculate with a lactic acid bacteria strain that thrives in the warm fermenting juice, enabling early completion of malo and a softer mouthfeel in the wine. The wine is drained after 7-10 days and the skins lightly pressed, following which we create the Melrose blend. After settling this is racked, sulphured, lightly fined to pull out some tannin and aid filterability, cross-flow filtered and sterile filtered at bottling. Total production in this vintage of “Melrose” Pinot was close to 5,500 dozen.

Souced from a renownd Pinot grower; this fruit comes from within the Beechworth GI. The vineyard backs on the the Murmungee Basin and has shale based soil. The clone is MV5 and vine age is 15 years. The site is quite windy which tends to make the tannins more pronounced.This wine was fermented in three tonne open fermenters, hand plunged three times a day and was fermented at varying temperatures to ensure good flavour and colour extraction. Care was taken not to work the ferment too much and release too much skin tannin. The wine was left in contact with skins post fermentation to increase colour and has not been filtered.Maturation of the wine was completed in French Oak barriques to increase complexity and add a little tannin structure. 15% of the wine is matured in new Sirugue Allier oak and the balance has been matured in one and two year old Sirugue Allier and Vosges oak barriques.This is a bold Pinot Noir. Bright and vibrant; more along the line of strawberry with the savoury spice of a Burgundy style. The tannis are persistent, adding length to the finish.

Meticulous sustainable viticulture and sensitive minimalist winemaking produces site-expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure.Now in its seventh year, this wine represents the exploration of our second site, located in Balnarring. This vineyard, planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, was acquired in 2007 but originally established in 1997. The original plantings comprise two distinct areas of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A third area has been planted to Pinot Noir, exploiting the higher-density planting matrix found throughout the Pinot Noir growing regions of the Old World.This wine was fermented in a combination of large-format wooden foudre and stainless-steel tanks. The ferment, with a small amount of whole bunches, commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 18 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (of which 20% were new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked only for bottling, with a total maturation period of 11 months. It was then bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

The Winter rainfall set up the vineyards well for Spring with overall temperatures during Spring slightly higher than average accompanied by below average rainfall. Flowering commenced mid late November with ideal weather conditions, resulting in one of the best fruit sets in many years. The mild to warm conditions continued throughout Summer and veraison commenced in mid-January. Harvest delivered fruitful crop loads matched with very stable weather conditions, ensuring vine performance and good ripeness. Picking commenced late February and the viticultural team worked steadily until the beginning of April delivering outstanding fruit. The white wines display excellent acidity, depth and intense fruit flavours. The red wines look poised and elegant with powerful aromatics and a great balance between tannin and acid.

The house owns or operates over eighty-seven hectare, or two hundred and fifty acres of Burgundy vineyard. The 2017 threw some challenges at us with a very dry growing season followed by a deluge of rain in late January.A burst of growth with some warm weather saw some rapid flavour development and we harvested the bulk of our Pinot Noir grapes over a busy two week period.Fruit was destemmed into open pots for a four day pre ferment maceration then inoculated with RC212 yeast with regular plunging during ferment to gently extract tannins. Upon dryness the wine was pressed to French barriques, 30% of which were new, where it remained for 9 months.After this time in oak, the wine was racked to tank where it was left for two months to further integrate the tannins. It was then sterile filtered and bottled.Total production for the 2016 Pinot Noir was 1887 dozen.

However, mild and sunny ripening weather in the last 4 weeks of veraison has produced grapes with fantastic fruit characters and excellent balanced acidity. Well developed canopies and below average yields provided the perfect environment for the harvesting of a full flavoured Pinot Noir. brioche. The palate is a mix of citrus (in particular lime), white stone fruits, fresh apples and raw almonds with a slightly creamy texture. Barrel fermentation has added some complexity and textural richness, which is balanced by crisp natural acidity.

Chile's unique geographical and climatic conditions offer it many advantages for wine production.The country is very long and thin - some 4500 km, yet it is only on average 150km wide, with the land sandwiched between the high, snow-capped Ands Mountain range and cold Pacific Ocean. The water temperature of Pacific is kept significantly colder by the Humbolt Current that flows up the Chilean coastline from Antarctica.The climate and soil conditions are almost perfect for grape growing;the influence and close proximity of cold air from the Andes and cool sea breezes cannot be overemphasised.
