Average rating 4.1 out of 5 stars

Lot No: 0038-2474180

Winemaker:

Vanessa Altmann from Switch Organic Wine - Top 12 finalist in Young Gun of Wine 2017Grown in Langhorne Creek, South Australia this wine shows bright fruit characters of cherry and raspberry, with soft gentle tannins. The wine has a delicious texture that finishes with a hint of earth typical of the region, and while Merlot has often been used for blending this wine reminds me of some of the best Pinot’s I’ve tasted, an elegant example of Merlot as a varietal. Picked during March 2017 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was steeped in a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon skins for around four days to build complexity and palate weight, while still remaining true to Merlot style. Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (262470-3)

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Vestigo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014 (12 x 750ml), Italy.

Vestigo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014 (12 x 750ml), Italy.

Lot No: 0045-2474180

This wine derives from 100% pure Montepulciano grapes, it is characterized by a mature style with a complex yet full rounded body. This red wine expresses perfectly the intensity of the historic and noble Abruzzo Montepulciano grape, with lush ripe fruit characteristics such as cherries, Marasca and dried prunes, accompanied by elegant notes of warm spices, tobacco and toasted almonds, all part of the ageing process given by the additional wooden barrel fermentation. The grapes are cultivated in Fossacesia approximately 140 meters above sea level, where the changing temperature between night and day allows excellent aromatic ripening and also a perfect maturation in polyphenolic antioxidants thus maintaining a pleasant freshness and fragrance. The grapes are cultivated on clayish, loam soil. They are grown in an espalier (Guyot) manner, with the planting density of 4000 plants per hectare. The grapes are picked and selected by hand in late October and after the stripping of the vine comes the fermentation and alcoholic maceration process with the addition of yeast at a temperature of 26 ° C for 22-24 days with repeated pumping and delestage. The red wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation with the addition of selected bacteria in large steel containers. Finally the wine is aged in 4 year old French medium toasted wooden oak barrels of 15hl in size and left to mature for 6-8 months. La Conquista! Tempranillo Garnacha Graciano 2015 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Lot No: 0014-2474180

Viticulture

- The Tempranillo (64%) comes from two vineyards: one on silty soil set next to the Tanunda golf course, the other in the richer clay and brown earth soils of Nuriootpa. The Grenache (22%) is from the famous sandy Vine Vale region and from the blue-chip foothills at the top of Krondorf Road with up to 70+ years of vine age. Finally the Graciano (14%) is from recently planted vines in the limestone-rich soils of the northern Eden Valley. Vinification - Fermentation takes place in open fermenters with 7 days of maceration before pressing into barrels. A relatively higher pH is tolerated for the Tempranillo as we anticipate the natural acidity of the Grenache and Graciano will offset this in the ultimate blend. Barrels are mostly used French and American hogsheads (300L), where they mature separately for about 7 months only, before bottling. (255940-4)

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.
Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.
Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Souced from vines grown on clay-chalk soils around Alba, and the neighbouring villages that form the Langhe plain and part of Roero. Guyot-trained with a vine density of 3,500 vines per hectare. There is a green harvest in May and July. No irrigation is used. Grapes are hand harvested in the middle of September. The Barbera grapes are sorted and selected, crushed softly and the stalks separated. The must is piped into steel tanks where it is fermented at a temperature of about 27 degrees for 10 days. Production continues with a lighter fermentation until the consumption of sugars is complete. The wine then spends around 6/8 months in steel tanks before bottling.
