Viña Quintay Clava Coastal Reserve Syrah 2013 (6 x 750mL), Limar Valley, Chile. This is a concentrated wine of elegance and complexity with a soft texture that is a feature of cool climate, coastal Syrah (Shiraz). De Bortoli `Windy Peak` Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Windy Peak wines are made at De Bortoli's Dixon's Creek winery from carefully selected fruit grown in the Yarra Valley, King Valley and other regions. The wines are generous in flavour with fine grained texture, perfect for bringing out the best in food. Fruit is sourced from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz grown on the red volcanic soils of Northern Heathcote. Fruit is harvested at 14.0-14.5 baume to achieve a balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into both static and rotary fermenters. The resultant wine is then fermented for up to two weeks on skins prior to pressing and racking. A third of the blend is matured for 5 months in older casks and the remainder stays in tank for freshness and brightness.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750ml)

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.

Penfolds Bin 138 GSM 2015 (6 x 750ml), Barossa, SA.

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak.Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Hentley Farm The Beast Shiraz 2013 (2x 750mL), Barossa Valley. Cork.

Lot No: 0015-2479054

Background

Like all great vineyard sites, this block’s expression of rich fruit and ripe, supple tannins result from the interaction between two key variables: soil and microclimate. Red clay loam topsoil overlying massive clay with bluestone at depth allow the creation of naturally low yields with intensive flavours. The block’s position is elevated and enjoys long, even sunlight exposure, further intensifying the aromatic and flavour profile. Vintage 2013- Well-below average winter rainfall and warm conditions in early spring resulted in an early start to the growing season with budburst two weeks earlier than the long-term average. These conditions continued through flowering and for the remainder of the growing season with only 4.5 mm rainfall recorded over the period. This resulted in low crop levels with great intensity in both colour and flavour. Winemaking The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and left on skins in open top fermenters for 8-10 days. After an early heat spike, a slow fermentation was achieved with temperatures ranging from 15-18C. Cap management included a combination of open pump-overs and hand plunging. Once fermentation was completed the wine was basket pressed to a combination of new (60%) and old French barrels, where it underwent natural malolacticfermentation. The wine spent a total of 22 months maturation in oak. No fining or filtration were used in the production of this wine. – Winemaker, Andrew Quin. (267141-27)

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.
