Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0036-2480563

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (267920-10)

Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0006-2480563

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (265704-3)

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2480563

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Port Phillip Estate Balnarring Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), VIC.

Meticulous sustainable viticulture and sensitive minimalist winemaking produces site-expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure. Now in its seventh year, this wine represents the exploration of our second site, located in Balnarring. This vineyard, planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, was acquired in 2007 but originally established in 1997. The original plantings comprise two distinct areas of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A third area has been planted to Pinot Noir, exploiting the higher-density planting matrix found throughout the Pinot Noir growing regions of the Old World. This wine was fermented in a combination of large-format wooden foudre and stainless-steel tanks. The ferment, with a small amount of whole bunches, commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 18 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (of which 20% were new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked only for bottling, with a total maturation period of 11 months. It was then bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

Port Phillip Estate Red Hill Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), VIC.

The Port Phillip Estate vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Red Hill, on Eocene volcanic soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.VintageFollowing a wet Winter, budburst commenced relatively late in mid-September. The Winter rainfall set up the vineyards well for Spring with overall temperatures during Spring slightly higher than average accompanied by below average rainfall. Flowering commenced mid late November with ideal weather conditions, resulting in one of the best fruit sets in many years. The mild to warm conditions continued throughout Summer and veraison commenced in mid-January. Harvest delivered fruitful crop loads matched with very stable weather conditions, ensuring vine performance and good ripeness. Picking commenced late February and the viticultural team worked steadily until the beginning of April delivering outstanding fruit. The white wines display excellent acidity, depth and intense fruit flavours. The red wines look poised and elegant with powerful aromatics and a great balance between tannin and acid.

Louis Max Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Louis Max, of Russian origin, founded his wine house in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1859. During the first half of the 20th century, the house of Louis Max enjoyed widespread acclaim and recognition for outstanding quality in the range of wines produced. The house has always retained a family structure and today, Laurent Max, great-grandson of founder Louis Max, together with a motivated team, has doted itself with all the means of success. The house owns or operates over eighty-seven hectare, or two hundred and fifty acres of Burgundy vineyard. The eccentric Laurent Max has invested heavily in the vinification facilities in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and, more importantly has installed the young and passionate Brigitte Putzu as head winemaker at Louis Max. Brigitte has spent over sixteen years at Louis Max, formerly as assistant winemaker, and has a long relationship with the 87 hectares of vineyards and clos that Louis Max controls. Brigitte’s wines illustrate her meticulousness in their ripeness, purity and balance. Since the 1996 harvest, Brigitte has had complete control of vineyard management and vinification for Louis Max. No single vineyard is harvested without Brigitte’s nod – only when ripeness is perfect both technically and physiologically.

Souced from a renownd Pinot grower; this fruit comes from within the Beechworth GI. The vineyard backs on the the Murmungee Basin and has shale based soil. The clone is MV5 and vine age is 15 years. The site is quite windy which tends to make the tannins more pronounced. This wine was fermented in three tonne open fermenters, hand plunged three times a day and was fermented at varying temperatures to ensure good flavour and colour extraction. Care was taken not to work the ferment too much and release too much skin tannin. The wine was left in contact with skins post fermentation to increase colour and has not been filtered.Maturation of the wine was completed in French Oak barriques to increase complexity and add a little tannin structure. 15% of the wine is matured in new Sirugue Allier oak and the balance has been matured in one and two year old Sirugue Allier and Vosges oak barriques. This is a bold Pinot Noir. Bright and vibrant; more along the line of strawberry with the savoury spice of a Burgundy style. The tannis are persistent, adding length to the finish.
