Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.
Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (264168-3)

Winemaking

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0001-2476237

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Winemaker:

Vanessa Altmann from Switch Organic Wine - Top 12 finalist in Young Gun of Wine 2017Grown in Langhorne Creek, South Australia this wine shows bright fruit characters of cherry and raspberry, with soft gentle tannins. The wine has a delicious texture that finishes with a hint of earth typical of the region, and while Merlot has often been used for blending this wine reminds me of some of the best Pinot’s I’ve tasted, an elegant example of Merlot as a varietal. Picked during March 2017 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was steeped in a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon skins for around four days to build complexity and palate weight, while still remaining true to Merlot style. La Francette Merlot NV (6 x 750mL) Vin de france

Lot No: 0030-2476223

La Francette Merlot NV

Merlot is a dark blue-coloured wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the colour of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin. Giesen Merlot 2015 (6 x 750mL) Hawkes Bay New Zealand

Winemaking

Fruit harvested from four vineyards, picked at optimum ripeness. Short pre-ferment maceration for colour and flavour extraction followed by a five to seven day ferment period. The wine was gently pressed offf the skins 2 days after ferment was complete, then inoculated for Malolactic Fermentation. The wine was rested on oak to add broadness and body to the wine. Minimal finings were used, before a gentle filtration.

Vintage Conditions

Hawke’s Bay experienced an excellent flowering season, with only moderate frost risk to marginal vineyards. The following summer was hot and dry. Three rain events just before harvest affected the harvest minimally, as they were followed by periods of high wind to dry the conditions out. The fruit showed opulence and balance when it was picked at optimum ripeness.

More vigorous canopy growth during bud development in 2011, ensured fewer bunches per vine and lighter bunch weights for the 2012 vintage effectively dropping yield rates 35 - 50%. For the most part, growing conditions were optimal right through the growing season with a few temperature and rainfall events which caused some anxiety. Immediately following the high temperatures was some cool weather and a large rain event which slowed down ripening and allowed the vintage to progress at a good rate.
