Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750ml) Barossa Valley, SA

Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lie very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the North West, where warm dry conditions and rich red soil provide the backbone to some of the region’s best-known wines. Each release delivers a contemporary shiraz alternative, framed by a mix of oaks; French and American, old and new – crafted in accordance with the traditional Penfolds method.

Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750ml). SA

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak.Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘Trial’ RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. They have the precision, concentration, persistency and balance to age for many years. The best vintages should last at least thirty years.

Cheval des Andes 2015 (6 x 750mL), Mendoza, Argentina.

The year 2015 high temperatures recorded from winter to summer, which threatened over ripening, but the year was “saved by the rain” in February that brought good freshness and ideal ripeness. In general, 2015 is a very elegant, discrete and subtle year with a more distinct Bordeaux style than its predecessors. The harvest took 15 days: the last week of March for Malbec first week of April for the Cabernet Sauvignon. From a winemaking point of view, 2015 marks a change in the barrels used: the team significantly increased the proportion of 400 and 500 litres tonneaux in order to preserve more of the fruit’s crispness.

Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

The Adelaide Hills was long considered too cool to ripen Shiraz. By the early 2000s, though, the potential for outstanding Shiraz from the right sites in the Adelaide Hills was compelling, and the first Shaw + Smith Shiraz was made in the 2002 vintage. Since then, Shiraz in the Hills has gone from strength to strength, its hallmarks being fragrance, intensity, and medium bodied elegance.

Masso Antico Primitivo 2017 (12 x 750mL), Apulia, Italy.

The grapes used for Masso Antico Primitivo are grown using the vine training method known as “Alberello”, which has ancient origins and is typical of the Mediterranean area of Italy. It was developed to compensate the lack of water and the very hot climate. The now very rare Alberello system represents a very important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of Apulia. The rigorous hand-picking is followed by a meticulous selection of the destemmed grapes. The grape withering on plants, favored by the sea wind, and a slow maturation in French oak barrels for about 6 months results in an outstanding full-bodied wine with soft tannins that release vanilla notes in the finish.

Penfolds `Bin 95 Grange` shiraz 2015 (1x 750mL) SA

Vintage Conditions

Across South Australia’s premium growing regions, winter and early spring rainfall were close to the long-term average. From August, conditions became significantly drier with only a few light spring showers recorded. Record low rainfall was recorded from September to March stretching water supplies. Warm and dry conditions encouraged early flowering and fruit-set, with rapid canopy growth. Early summer temperatures dropped below average with no major heat waves recorded. Once harvest commenced, it progressed rapidly with most blocks of shiraz picked earlier than previous years. Although the prevailing conditions resulted in lower than anticipated yields, the quality of fruit was exceptional. A strong Penfolds vintage.

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 2015 (2x 750mL), Barossa Valley. Cork

5 Star Provenance !! Robert O’Callaghan’s evocative Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a tribute to the Barossa’s 19th and early 20th-century heritage. Made from grapes sourced from 60 to 140-year-old dry-grown vineyards (most from independent growers) across a range of Barossa soils, altitudes and micro-climates, the wine represents a rare and important post-colonial Australian aesthetic. This soft and medium bodied style, with an earthy quality showing through bottle age, echoes the landscape of the Barossa and references the great mid 20th-century wines of legendary winemaker Colin Preece. Labour-intensive winemaking practices, a culture of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail culminate in one of Australia’s greatest and most-loved winesFruit is hand picked then vinified using classic Barossa techniques including a 19th-century wooden Bagshaw crusher, open fermentation and basket pressing. Matured primarily in seasoned 300-litre French and American oak hogsheads and 2500-litre vats for two years. Neatly juxtaposed between powerful and elegant, the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is beautifully tensioned with exquisite dark berry fruits, inky complexity, underlying roasted chestnut notes and long, muscular but precise tannins.
