Dog Point Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

The name Dog Point dates back to the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. These were the days where, due to a lack of fences, boundary riders used boundary-keeping dogs to protect the local flocks of sheep.

Cheval des Andes 2015 (6 x 750mL), Mendoza, Argentina.
Cheval des Andes 2015 (6 x 750mL), Mendoza, Argentina.

The year 2015 high temperatures recorded from winter to summer, which threatened over ripening, but the year was “saved by the rain” in February that brought good freshness and ideal ripeness. In general, 2015 is a very elegant, discrete and subtle year with a more distinct Bordeaux style than its predecessors. The harvest took 15 days: the last week of March for Malbec first week of April for the Cabernet Sauvignon. From a winemaking point of view, 2015 marks a change in the barrels used: the team significantly increased the proportion of 400 and 500 litres tonneaux in order to preserve more of the fruit’s crispness.

Penfolds Grange `Bin 95` 2014 (1 x 750mL). AUS

The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilising fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured Shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.Grange was recently recognised as a First Growth in Liv-ex’s recreation of the Bordeaux 1855 classification.

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750mL), SA.

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak.Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.“We’d like to say: St Henri, 1895 – 2015: A style 120 years young! But, we don’t know for sure. Some records indicate the first St Henri may have been created as early as 1890!”“St Henri: style conviction. Definition. Still a ‘Claret’ style, but not legally. Distractingly a 7% Cabernet inclusion reminds us of earlier times, and its earlier moniker.”- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Penfolds `Bin 707` Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (1 x 750mL), SA.

Bin 707 perfectly reflects the Penfolds ‘House Style’ through a cabernet sauvignon lens: intensely-flavoured fruit; completion of fermentation and maturation in new oak; expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964.Full-bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 retains a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s finest cabernets.“Penfolds ‘Grange of cabernet’. Again. Arguably not classically cabernet, certainly classic 707.”“Needs time to unravel – much more to be revealed. As it reluctantly unfurls we’re now cognisant that it’s barely the start of this wine’s journey..”“Sadly, nowadays ever so much harder to find on shelf. Make more? If only …”.“Decanting mandatory. Decanter optional. Timing critical.”- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Yangarra Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.
Yangarra Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

There are 100 hectares of vineyards at Yangarra in 35 individual blocks. These vineyards are spread amongst an extra 70 hectares of creeks, native vegetation and native corridors. Our estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation. The vineyard is certified Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil, which involves no use of bynthetic herbicides or fungicides, use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption.

Kilikanoon Tregea Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (6 x 750mL), Clare Valley, SA.

Low yielding fruit from two vineyards, one positioned in the warmer Leasingham district and the other at our cellar door in the cooler, more elevated Skillogalee valley.A classic Clare Valley vintage that featured warm days and cooler night temperatures, slowing down the harvest allowing both vineyards to be hand picked at their optimum levels of ripeness and maximising the development of the cassis and tobacco leaf characters, fine tannins and balanced natural acidity.Once the hand picked fruit arrived at the winery, it was gently crushed and fermented on skins until dryness using selected, cultured yeasts. Once dry, each batch was basket pressed into a selection of new and 1 year old French oak hogsheads and allowed to mature for 18 months in our cellars. Final composition and bottling occurred without fining or filtration. This is the finest Cabernet in our portfolio with less than 3000 bottles produced.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2016 (6 x750mL), SA.

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.“Certainly not a definitive example Bin 389 of yore – this 2016 vintage release retains style yet pushes cabernet/shiraz blend boundaries … ever so deftly!””“Coincidentally or otherwise, a Japanese ‘demeanour’ unfolded during preview tastings – many Japanese-linked descriptors availed, some used, others not.” “Quercus alba – are you sure?! …Savoury, sandalwood nuances noted. No doubt, however, about this wine’s captivating sheen/poise.”- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Masso Antico Primitivo 2017 (12 x 750mL), Apulia, Italy.

The grapes used for Masso Antico Primitivo are grown using the vine training method known as “Alberello”, which has ancient origins and is typical of the Mediterranean area of Italy. It was developed to compensate the lack of water and the very hot climate. The now very rare Alberello system represents a very important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of Apulia. The rigorous hand-picking is followed by a meticulous selection of the destemmed grapes. The grape withering on plants, favored by the sea wind, and a slow maturation in French oak barrels for about 6 months results in an outstanding full-bodied wine with soft tannins that release vanilla notes in the finish.

Rockford `Basket Press` Shiraz 2012 (1 x 1.5L Magnum), Barossa Valley. Cork

Robert O’Callaghan is the very modest owner and winemaker of Rockford Wines in the Barossa Valley. One of the most respected boutique wineries in Australia, Rockford produces the Basket Press Shiraz (first vintage 1984) and the Black Shiraz, a sparkling red that is almost black in colour. In the l970s when wineries were updating their equipment, Robert bought and restored buildings from the 1850's and old winemaking machinery so that he could make his wines using both traditional winemaking techniques and equipment - his only concession to the latter half of the twentieth century is refrigeration and some new forms of yeast. The Shiraz fruit is sourced from local growers – many of the best dry-grown old vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa – including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, the Eden Valley and Central Barossa. The vines are between 60 and 136 years old giving fruit of tremendous colour, power and richness."
