Nova Vita `Firebird` Pinot Noir 2014 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Grape growing is not without its challenges with a brief burst of high heat early February and then significant tropical rain to break the heat creating a challenge. However, mild and sunny ripening weather in the last 4 weeks of veraison has produced grapes with fantastic fruit characters and excellent balanced acidity. Well developed canopies and below average yields provided the perfect environment for the harvesting of a full flavoured Pinot Noir. brioche. The palate is a mix of citrus (in particular lime), white stone fruits, fresh apples and raw almonds with a slightly creamy texture. Barrel fermentation has added some complexity and textural richness, which is balanced by crisp natural acidity.

Philip Shaw `No.89` Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), Orange, NSW.

The fruit used for No.89 is from the 20 year old vines that exhibit powerful spices and peppery flavours – a representation of a classic cool area Shiraz. The oak adds complexity, but the intense fruit restrains and helps harmonise. The flavours are vibrant and follow the aroma of spicy fruit characters. Soft fine tannins combine with great length of flavour to give a wine of youth that will repay cellaring.

Yangarra `PF` Preservative Free Shiraz 2018 (6 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

2018 was a text book growing season with good winter rains, and favourable weather conditions during a very mild spring. We had a generally dry summer, which led to earlier than expected picking dates, especially with lower than average yields. By the end of February and early March the Autumnal nights got quite cool, enabling the flavour ripeness to catch up with the sugar. The vineyard is certified Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil. This involves the use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption. There is no use of synthetic herbicides or fungicides.

2017 was a long, relatively cool one on the Mornington Peninsula. Cold and wet weather around flowering and fruit set has delivered large variation throughout the region in terms of quality and quantity. Being in a warmer part of the region we ripened our fruit in near perfect condition. Harvest date was later relative to the long term average with a below average crop load. In summary, the season has produced good flavour ripeness at lower sugars with bright and intense fruit flavours, nice structure and good acid balance.

Peter Lehmann `Stonewell` Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL), Barossa Valley SA.
Peter Lehmann `Stonewell` Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL), Barossa Valley SA.

The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz. This tradition has continued and each vintage the best Shiraz fruit from our extensive network of growers is chosen to create Stonewell. Usually no more than a dozen small, old vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 1.5 tonnes per acre. The pedigree of these vineyards and the knowledge that has been passed from each grape growing generation to the next assures us that Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great longevity that can be cellared with confidence for many years to come.

Rolf Binder `Heinrich` SMG 2014 (12 x 750mL), Barossa, SA.

The ‘Heinrich’ is a tribute wine to Rolf and Christa’s father, Rolf Heinrich Binder as he loved to work with these three great Barossa varietals – Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache. Rolf continues that legacy with this classic blend and rates it as one of his favourite wines to make. It’s more common to see a GSM blend in the Barossa, but Rolf believes that Shiraz is our best asset, so why not lead with your best? The blend ratio is typically in the range of 50/30/20.This is an estate wine with the Shiraz and Mataro grapes grown in the Stephanie vineyard, adjacent to the winery. The Grenache is sourced from the estate vineyard on the Western Ridge at Gomersal, planted in the early 1950s as well as some Grenache from the Binder Deans Light Pass vineyard.

Thomson Estate Double Pass Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) SA

Winemaking

- Vine-dried grapes from our estate block 46, were fermented into concentrated flavour and richness. The fruit started to bag and pucker, created integrated fruit sugars, acid and tannins,. It was thenpassed back over already fermented Shiraz. The result is full-bodied complexity, layered with intriguing characters for a well balanced and lingering palate.1838 was the year Walter Thomson, with wife Jane, arrived in Australia and established a winemaking tradition. Faithful to his approach, our estate grown parcels are carefully tended by our vignerons to create wines of greatintensity.Double Pass Shiraz is created in the blending of two parcels of estate grown fruit. Vine dried grapes, which have richly textured and powerful complexity are fermented and then blended with already fermented estateShiraz to create the Double Pass. Ripe blackberry fruits and silky tannins are alive with richness. Best served with sauce-laden meats and dishes with abundant flavours.

Hutton Vale Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL), Eden Valley, SA.

The pedigree and provenance of the Shiraz vineyards at Hutton Vale Farm is impressive. The ‘old’ block was planted in the 1960s with cuttings taken from the nearby Mount Edelstone vineyard. 50 years or more down the track, the old dry grown vines continue to survive, the dry conditions a perfect foil for the natural vigour of Shiraz. The ‘young’ block was planted to the East in the 1990s on a sloping site in a similarly tough environment, using cuttings taken from the ‘old’ block. The 2013 vintage was the driest, earliest and quickest in living memory. 2012 winter and spring rainfalls were amongst the driest on record and hot conditions throughout harvest guaranteed very low yields from the dry grown Hutton Vale Farm vineyards. But the quality of Shiraz was exceptional, showing great color and balance of flavour, tannin and acidity. The fruit was harvested in early March and fermented in open fermenters for 5 days with twice daily pump overs before transfer to 50% new/ 50% seasoned oak hogsheads for 2 years prior to bottling. The wines were bottle matured for a further 12 months before release in September 2016. 340 dozen bottles were made.

Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.
