De Bortoli `Windy Peak` Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Windy Peak wines are made at De Bortoli's Dixon's Creek winery from carefully selected fruit grown in the Yarra Valley, King Valley and other regions. The wines are generous in flavour with fine grained texture, perfect for bringing out the best in food. Fruit is sourced from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz grown on the red volcanic soils of Northern Heathcote. Fruit is harvested at 14.0-14.5 baume to achieve a balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into both static and rotary fermenters. The resultant wine is then fermented for up to two weeks on skins prior to pressing and racking. A third of the blend is matured for 5 months in older casks and the remainder stays in tank for freshness and brightness.

Mr Riggs The Truant Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Mr Riggs The Truant Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0022-2479007

History

John William Riggs was born in Dorset 1814, and was the ‘Mr. Riggs’ – Ben’s great- great- great grandfather. This influential man was a person who didn’t think highly of the school curriculum, but often focused more on wagging school. He managed to wag school at the age of seven, then commenced working for a living at the rate of one shilling a week. This was however only a minor inconvenience for ‘The Truant’ who signed with an ‘X’. In time, he became master of one of South Australia’s outstanding farming enterprises in the early years of settlement. Vineyard The Shiraz grapes used to make ‘The Truant has been sourced from select vineyards in McLaren Vale. With dominant winter rainfall and warm, dry summers of low humidity tempered by the proximity to the Gulf St.Vincent, McLaren Vale has one of the most consistent climates in which to grow premium wine grapes, particularly Shiraz. Bodega Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Bodega Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0006-2479007

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Fermented in open stainless steel tanks with twice daily pumpovers aiding fruit tannin development. Maturation in French oak for 12 months encouraged wine development and structural complexity. The objective was to produce an elegant Shiraz with complex aromas and characters and with texture and structure. (265269-2)

The Hay Valley is just west of Mt Barker in the heart of the Great Southern wine growing district of Western Australia. From post war farming and apple growing, the region is now a well-established area for viticulture with the first vines planted here in the late 1960’s. With its mature vineyards, moderate yields and Mediterranean climate, many grape varieties do well, producing crisp dry whites with vibrant, fresh fruit flavours and well balanced reds with great colour, flavour and structure. Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from our family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable.

At Oxford Landing, we like to ‘keep it real’. That means maintaining a sense of perspective and recognising what really matters. Remembering where we came from and being proud of our roots. And making wines that are a true reflection of the place they come from. Set on the banks of South Australia’s majestic Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard is named after a nearby site where an old paddle steamer called ‘The City of Oxford’ met with an untimely end. Drovers once grazed and watered sheep here but today it’s home to a loyal flock of down-to-earth folk who take great pride in making quality wines, enjoyed the world over.

January and February brought perfect ripening conditions, with temperatures in the mid to high 20’s, and cool nights during allowing for retention of acid and fine flavor development. Yields were 7 tonnes per hectare. Site selection The fruit was picked from various blocks with vines aged between 21 and 33 years old, grown on high north facing slopes to maximize sunshine hours. Northerly winds from Long Gully provide good air flow and favourable micro-climates across the Estate.

Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Jimmy Grampians Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL) VIC. Screwcap Closure.

Established in 1970, Montara is captivating with its panorama of plains, mountains, vines, and old-world charm of the Ararat gold rush days. Situated 200 kilometres west of Melbourne in the Grampians region, it is a feast for the eyes and the spirit. The Grampians has one of the best climates in the world for growing quality grapes, and the average temperatures at Montara are optimal for producing intensely flavoured wines with distinct characteristics. A January mean temperature of 19ºC, along with mostly clear skies and cool evenings in the growing season, allows our fruit to gradually ripen over a long period of time. Average annual rainfall is approximately 500mm.
