Mitolo 7th Son Grenache Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Mitolo 7th Son Grenache Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0022-2481279

STYLE

Seventh Son Grenache Shiraz is quite a different wine for Mitolo and a commitment to the McLaren Vale region and its most revered varieties. The Grenache portion, sourced from old bush vines off the sands of Blewitt Springs, provides rustic, lighter, earthier flavours than the fruit forward, softer Shiraz portion sourced from the Lopresti vineyards. When blended together though these opposites provide a great foil for each other, creating a complex and intriguing wine. There is very little new oak influence in this wine, with older oak barrels chosen for the elevage. The tannins are sandy, almost gritty, helped along by the tiny dollop of Sagrantino, a littleItalian twist on a classic blend from southern France and McLaren Vale. This is a wine made more in the earthy style of the wines of my European heritage, yet still speaks loudly of place, McLaren vale, with its generosity and purity. VINEYARD The Grenache is sourced from the northern part of McLaren Vale known as Blewitt Springs where the soil is deep sand. This vineyard of old gnarly bush vines is dry grown and farmed with minimal input. It is a significantly cooler site than where the Shiraz and Sagrantino parcels are sourced: the Mitolo Lopresti vineyard found about 30km to the south on the clay flatlands near the beach. The cooler conditions and sandy soil give the Grenache wine big fragrance and firm structure. The Shiraz offers a juxtaposition of style with the warmer conditions and heavy clay soil giving a richness and soft structure that are an ideal foil for the Grenache. VINIFICATION The Shiraz and Grenache parcels were kept separate until the final blending stage just prior to bottling. Both parcels were destemmed without crushing then pumped over once daily. The ferment was kept cool throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters that are a signature for Mitolo. The wine was kept in one and two year old barrels, all of French origin, for 18months before being blended. We added just a small amount of Sagrantino to the final blend, also from the Lopresti vineyard,to enhance the structure of the wine. The final blend was clarified by racking only, and bottled without fining or filtration. (268555-3)

Stage Door Wine Co. Front & Centre Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Lot No: 0042-2481213

The 2014 growing season was one of the wackiest in living memory! Following the low yielding 2013 vintage the season started well, but the first threat came from unseasonal late frosts. Summer was the hottest on record with 13 days recording a maximum of over 40ºC. During this period the devastating Eden Valley bushfire ignited on 17 January adjacent the Eden Valley Township, but thankfully (for us), the winds took it in an opposite direction. The hottest ever summer was followed by the wettest day since 1969 with more than 100 mm of rain falling on Valentine’s Day. Whilst some rain would have been welcome, too much of a good thing caused further loss of crop through splitting of fruit. Harvest was then on in earnest beginning with some Riesling blocks on 26 February and finishing earlier than usual with Cabernet and Shiraz on 6 April. A rollercoaster year that ultimately produced good fruit, but very low yields. (263879-1)

Mitolo Angela Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Mitolo Angela Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0024-2481213

STYLE

Angela is a slightly different expression of Shiraz which is sourced from Sandra’s block, located about 5km south of the Chinese Block we use for our G.A.M. Shiraz. We have always used grapes from Sandra’s block as a blending component in our Jester Shiraz but as this vineyard has matured, it has shown its potential to stand alone as a single vineyard wine. I have always loved the slightly brighter fruit profile and complete structure that we get from Sandra’s block. It has the ideal power and weight to sit between our Jester Shiraz and premium G.A.M. Shiraz. Angela is lifted with pure, ripe berry flavours at the forefront and subtle oak, allowing the fruit flavours to shine. VINEYARD We source the Shiraz fruit for this wine from Sandra’s block, located at the southern end of McLaren Vale nearthe seaside town of Willunga. The soil and geology of this block differ slightly to Chinese Block, with less black Biscay clay and more alluvial Christies Beach formation. This soil type contains rocky fragments that have been sheared off the nearby hills and deposited in this soil millions of years ago. It is free draining, resulting in less vigour over spring and more content vines in the ripening period. This leads to a bright and uplifted wine style whilst retaining signature Mitolo Shiraz softness. VINIFICATION Although the 2014 vintage produced lower yields, the wine quality is excellent with great colour and bright, pure fruit flavours. Shiraz for Angela is destemmed and crushed gently then pumped over once daily for around ten days. The ferment was kept cool throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters that are a signature for Mitolo. The wine was kept in a combinationof new (~10%) and one and two year old barrels, mainly of French origin, for 18 months before being blended. The final blend is clarified by racking only, and bottled without fining or filtration. Jester Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Jester Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0014-2481225

ORIGIN

The Jester Cabernet comprises 20% Amarone fruit, dried for approximately 7-8 weeks, following the Italian appassimento technique of drying grapes on racks. The vineyards are located at the southern end of McLaren Vale, close to the seaside town of Aldinga. The combination of cool sea breezes and gully winds provide ideal conditions for growing fruit of intensity and balance. The vines sit on heavy clay, which gives the wine powerful fruit flavours. Best shared with family and friends, this is a Cabernet with great personality and generosity. CREATION The 2014 vintage produced high quality wines with great colour, and bright, pure fruit flavours. Twenty per cent of the fruit is dried using the ancient Italian appassimento technique prior to fermentation, for approximately 7-8 weeks. The remaining grapes are fermented on skins for six to ten days, at cool temperatures to enhance pureberry fruit. Aside from producing a wine with a complete framework of tannin and intense fruit characteristics, this process adds a beautiful sensuous plushness to the mid palate. WHAT’S IN A NAME? The Jesters of the Courts of Europe had one motivation, to entertain the household of a nobleman and his guests. The Jester, a modern day entertainer, is exactly that. Able to excite and tell stories at any dinner table, he is the life of the party. He waivers from fits of laughter, to being somewhat risqué and suggestive. Ultimately, he is there to remind us not to take life too seriously. He gathers friends around regularly to eat and drink well, as he of course is the instigator of such frivolity. We all know a modern day Jester, and to them, the life of theparty, we salute the Jester in you. (268555-11)
