Brokenwood `Cricket Pitch Red` Cabernet Merlot Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL)AUS.
Brokenwood `Cricket Pitch Red` Cabernet Merlot Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL)AUS.

The 26th vintage of Cricket Pitch Red (not counting the 1986) is both multi-varietal and multi-regional. Just over 60% of the wine is from New South Wales with the balance McLaren vale followed by Beechworth. A cool year in the Hunter Valley but excellent in Central Ranges and Gundagai with McLaren Vale experiencing a hot vintage. Vintage 2016 was outstanding in Beechworth and combination of these regions really does deliver a super enjoyable dry red.

Bodega Catena Zapata 'Alamos' Malbec 2018 (12 x 750mL), Mendoza, Argentina.

Bodega Catena have long believed that every wine begins in the vineyard, pioneering a research project into the microclimates of Mendoza. Through the planting of select clones on various blocks, Bodega Catena were able to identify the ideal locations. Sites which are just a few kilometers apart can have vast differences in altitude and possess markedly different microclimates. The same varietal and even the same clone, can exhibit distinct aromatic and flavour profiles. All vines are all managed by hand and are trained to produce extremely low yields. This wines are made in very limited quantities, fruit is micro fermented in new French oak barriques and treated to an extended ageing in new French oak.

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.
Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

House of Plantagenet `Lancaster` Shiraz 2015 (12 x 750mL), Mount Barker, WA

Overall the Great Southern saw an excellent growing season and 2014 harvest. The season was characterised initially by unseasonally strong winds leading to some slight inflorescence damage. These conditions subsided in the two weeks prior to flowering however and much of the Great Southern saw good fruit set. Moderate rainfall during the early growing season was welcome on the whole but excess moisture did provide a small amount of disease pressure. Later in the season however, the region saw particularly dry conditions with very little rainfall in the two months leading in to harvest and presenting some challenges in particular for dry grown vineyards. A typical strong diurnal effect was observed, with cold nights and warm days leading to a long, uniform slow ripening period.

Red Claw Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Good soaking rains during winter and early spring provided ample soil moisture for the start of the growing season. Spring was relatively cool with below average temperatures for the months of October and November. A heavy downpour of rain during flowering led to reduced berry number per bunch in the Grenache particularly, leading to lower yields but intense flavours. However, the rain and cool weather was short lived, with a return to below average rain from October to February and above average temperatures in December through to March. The prolonged warmer temperatures resulted in a significantly slower veraison this season, but the vines coped well under the conditions and welcomed some cooler weather late in the ripening period. Berry sizes were smaller across the vineyard and show promising fruit concentration. As always, the vineyard was entirely hand picked with each parcel of fruit carefully selected.

Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2015 (12 x 375mL), Marlborough, NZ.

Pinot Noir is hand-harvested from vines in Spy Valley's Marlborough vineyard, gently separated from the stems and fermented in small, traditional open-top vats. These vats are hand-plunged to extract colour and tannin, and after pressing the wine is aged in French oak barrels. This is a fruit-driven style of Pinot Noir with soft tannins and spicy oak.

Fox Creek Three Block Cabernet 2016 (12 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.
Fox Creek Three Block Cabernet 2016 (12 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

First produced in 2014, Three Blocks Cabernet Sauvignon epitomises Cabernet in McLaren Vale—lifted varietal aroma, rich mid palate fruit and complex, well-ripened tannins that show power and structure. Fox Creek used the geology map, clone planting reports and a network of contacts around the region to identify potential vineyards that were suited to achieving the search for more elegant, stylish and varietal Cabernet fruit. As the name implies, ‘Three Blocks‘ is sourced from three very different premium McLaren Vale vineyards each featuring different soil types; one vineyard has well drained sandy loam soils over silica sand and clay formation, the second, grey sand over North Maslin sandstone and the third featuring black Biscay clay over Pirramimma sandstone. Each vineyard batch was matured in oak specifically matched to these Cabernet vineyards from a range of French coopers. The batches were shifted between different oak types to impart layers of flavour and enhance the structure. The final blend used different percentages of each of the vineyard parcels to achieve the layers of flavour and tannin profile desired.
