Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.
Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW
Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

House of Plantagenet `Lancaster` Shiraz 2015 (12 x 750mL), Mount Barker, WA

Overall the Great Southern saw an excellent growing season and 2014 harvest. The season was characterised initially by unseasonally strong winds leading to some slight inflorescence damage. These conditions subsided in the two weeks prior to flowering however and much of the Great Southern saw good fruit set. Moderate rainfall during the early growing season was welcome on the whole but excess moisture did provide a small amount of disease pressure. Later in the season however, the region saw particularly dry conditions with very little rainfall in the two months leading in to harvest and presenting some challenges in particular for dry grown vineyards. A typical strong diurnal effect was observed, with cold nights and warm days leading to a long, uniform slow ripening period.

Stage Door Wine Co. Front & Centre Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Lot No: 0045-2477157

The 2014 growing season was one of the wackiest in living memory! Following the low yielding 2013 vintage the season started well, but the first threat came from unseasonal late frosts. Summer was the hottest on record with 13 days recording a maximum of over 40ºC. During this period the devastating Eden Valley bushfire ignited on 17 January adjacent the Eden Valley Township, but thankfully (for us), the winds took it in an opposite direction. The hottest ever summer was followed by the wettest day since 1969 with more than 100 mm of rain falling on Valentine’s Day. Whilst some rain would have been welcome, too much of a good thing caused further loss of crop through splitting of fruit. Harvest was then on in earnest beginning with some Riesling blocks on 26 February and finishing earlier than usual with Cabernet and Shiraz on 6 April. A rollercoaster year that ultimately produced good fruit, but very low yields. (263879-1)

Jester Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Jester Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0029-2477157

Origin

A lot of love goes into our wines, and our Jester Shiraz is no exception. We affectionately refer to our Jester Shiraz as our ‘baby G.A.M.’ - reusing the same oak barrels in which our G.A.M. Shiraz was previously aged. The vineyards for the Jester Shiraz are located at the southern end of McLaren Vale, close to the seaside town of Aldinga. The combination of cool sea breezes and gully winds provide ideal conditions for growing fruit ofintensity and balance. The vines sit in heavy clay, which gives the wine powerful fruit flavours. In 2012 ideal conditions over the growing season produced a fantastic wine that speaks of its origin. The wine is full flavoured, with dark fruits and savoury black olive characters, and soft, silky tannins. Creation The 2013 vintage was a great one for us in McLaren Vale, producing deeply flavoured wines with greatenergy. The Shiraz fruit for our Jester wine is crushed immediately after being delivered to us at the winery. We allow the skin and juice mix to warm naturally over a period of several days, after which it begins fermentation. The ferment is held cool, to retain the bright primary fruit characters which appear in the resulting wine. Following ferment we carefully press the wine to separate it from the skins. The wine is then transferred into oak barrels (10% new for this vintage) where it stays for eighteen months before it hits the bottle, and then our family and friends tables. All of our Jester wines are named after Jesters of the 15th and 16th Century. For this wine, we chose a Jester who, like the wine, is often a favourite amongst its peers. Richard Tarlton drew significant attention as a favourite amongst the Jesters of Queen Elizabeth 1. Tarlton, the first to achieve national celebrity as a comedian, also boasted a successful career in the theatre as a leading member of the Queen’s Players. Hedabbled as a writer, and published a number of popular ballads and plays. The talented Jester was a complex and colourful character, much like our Jester wine. (265762-6)
