Stage Door Wine Co. Front & Centre Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Stage Door Wine Co. Front & Centre Shiraz 2014 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Lot No: 0042-2480267

The 2014 growing season was one of the wackiest in living memory! Following the low yielding 2013 vintage the season started well, but the first threat came from unseasonal late frosts. Summer was the hottest on record with 13 days recording a maximum of over 40ºC. During this period the devastating Eden Valley bushfire ignited on 17 January adjacent the Eden Valley Township, but thankfully (for us), the winds took it in an opposite direction. The hottest ever summer was followed by the wettest day since 1969 with more than 100 mm of rain falling on Valentine’s Day. Whilst some rain would have been welcome, too much of a good thing caused further loss of crop through splitting of fruit. Harvest was then on in earnest beginning with some Riesling blocks on 26 February and finishing earlier than usual with Cabernet and Shiraz on 6 April. A rollercoaster year that ultimately produced good fruit, but very low yields. (263879-1)

Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL), Barossa, SA.

It all began several generations ago with James "George" Goddard. In 1871 he filed a mining prospectus - a simple document by today's standards. But for this sailor, whaler, bullock driver, farmer, prospector, later miner and hotel keeper this was his El Dorado - or more correctly his Lady Alice Mine, at Humbug Scrub in the Barossa Goldfields in South Australia. The mine continued operations until 1892 when it was flooded by water from a nearby reservoir, and two miners were drowned.Under George's management, the mine prospered for a considerable time, paying out several thousand pounds in dividends. He, his wife and family lived at Lady Alice where he ran the Hotel and Store until his death in 1897.His story reads like that of a great wine maker - Prospecting, digging, discovering, building, producing and sharing the spoils.

St Hallett Sacred Ground Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

The Vintage

A short winter and warm dry spring got the growing season off to an early start with mild days. A well timed rain in mid-January brought relief to dry vineyards and rainwater tanks alike after many months of no rain. The early start and ideal ripening conditions after the rain brought on vintage at a frantic pace, with all the 2015 wines showing abundant aromas and flavours. Barossa Valley Shiraz yields were slightly below average, and all the wines showed good concentration, superb colour and richness. The Vineyard The Fromm Family Vineyard – located at 200m elevation in the south eastern pocket near Lyndoch Township in the Barossa Valley. The vineyard site gently slopes on red brown loam soils. The Vinification The St Hallett winemaking philosophy is relatively simple - minimum intervention and maximum attention. All Shiraz vineyards are crushed and fermented separately. The Fromm vineyard parcel destined for this wine was fermented for 8 days at 22 to 24 degrees. Post fermentation the wine was matured in seasoned American and French Oak for 12 months before being blended and bottled. The Inspiration The history of grape growing in Barossa dates back to the 1840’s. Since this time the local community has existed for wine. With each vintage that passes and with every generation that succeeds their forbearers, a more intimate relationship with the land evolves. is evolution helps to unearth plots of sacred ground that hold something special. Such is the case with the Fromm vineyard. Fourth generation Barossa grower, Ryan Fromm, lovingly tends this special plot near the township of Williamstown in the southern part of the Barossa Valley. In successive tastings over many vintages, this block has earned the acknowledgement of ‘Sacred Ground’ for its richness, depth and complexity.

Yalumba Galway Vintage Traditional Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Barossa, SA

Vintage Conditions

A typical cold Barossa winter flowed into a wet spring and cool growing season. In response, the harvest of Shiraz grapes across our Barossa vineyards was about two to four weeks later than we had experienced over the last decade or so. Fine and clear weather during the harvest period and a certain degree of patience made for excellent flavour and tannin accumulation in our Shiraz grapes, as seen in this outstanding wine. Winemaking The vineyards for the Galway Vintage Shiraz are sourced from our loyal family grower base in the Barossa. The grapes were fermented in static potter and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also 3 to 5 days post fermentation has helped extract soft fleshy tannins and build wine structure.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Hermitage Shiraz 1981 (1x 750mL), Coonawarra. Cork.

Lot No: 0085-2478434

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is a wine company particularly well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the famed terra rossa soils of the Coonawarra region of South Australia. The estate was founded in 1891 by John Riddoch, and bought in 1951 by David and Samuel Wynn, who began to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. By 1981, vineyard holdings had expanded to 440 hectares (1087 acres), making Wynns the largest estate in the region. The figure is now nearer 850ha (2100 hectares), a small percentage of which is farmed under contract. The brand's flagship wine is the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine, which comes from the best parcels of Cabernet, is only made in the very best years. It is aged in French oak (a small portion of which is new), and can be cellared for a decade or more, depending on the vintage. The Wynns Michael Shiraz is another of Australia's most famous wines – the Coonawarra region was founded in the 19th Century on Shiraz, rather than Cabernet, and Wynn's oldest vines date back to 1894. Wynns' Black Label wines are more value-driven than their premium counterparts, and are widely distributed. (267141-93)

Turkey Flat Shiraz 2002 (3x 750mL), Barossa Valley. Cork closure.

Lot No: 0079-2478434

The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.
