Port Phillip Estate `Balnarring` Pinot Noir 2016 (6 x 750mL), VIC.

Meticulous sustainable viticulture and sensitive minimalist winemaking produces site-expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure. Now in its fifth year, this wine represents the exploration of our second site, located in Balnarring. This vineyard, planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, was acquired in 2007 but originally established in 1997. The original plantings comprise two distinct areas of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A third area has been planted to Pinot Noir, exploiting the higher-density planting matrix found throughout the Pinot Noir growing regions of the Old World. This wine was fermented in a combination of large-format wooden foudre and stainless-steel tanks. The ferment, with a small amount of whole bunches, commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 18 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (of which 20% were new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked only for bottling, with a total maturation period of 11 months. It was then bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

Merricks Esate Pinot Noir 2013 (12 x 750mL), Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

Pinot noir is a thin skinned grape that needs to be treated with great finesse and respect. Handpicked and gently destemmed before partial whole berry fermentation in open Fermenters. The must was hand plunged frequently to produce the deeper colours and aromatic flavours. Then pressed off skins and maturated in French oak barriques.

Tyrrell's `Special Release` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

Vineyard

Sourced predominately from our HVD vineyard with the remaining fruit coming from our Short Flat and 4 & 8 Acres vineyards. Vintage Conditions The 2017 vintage in the Hunter Valley was one of the best in recent memory, producing wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in Winter and Spring meant the vines had constant access to water, and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition when it was harvested. Winemaker’s Notes A mixture of both hand and machine harvesting, with the hand component forming the percentage of whole bunch fermentation we required. In this instance it was 20%. The machine picked fruit was placed on top of these whole bunches. The ferments were gently pumped over three times daily before gentle pressing and maturation for 9 months in French Oak barriques, 5% new.

Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.

Dexter Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750ml), Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

2017 was a long, relatively cool one on the Mornington Peninsula. Cold and wet weather around flowering and fruit set has delivered large variation throughout the region in terms of quality and quantity. Being in a warmer part of the region we ripened our fruit in near perfect condition. Harvest date was later relative to the long term average with a below average crop load. In summary, the season has produced good flavour ripeness at lower sugars with bright and intense fruit flavours, nice structure and good acid balance.

Our philosophy is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of our site and the season in which it was grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression. The 2018 season was characterised by a warm and extended summer. The wines are intensely flavoured, yet poised and balanced, ensuring their longevity.
