Holm Oak Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), TAS.

Several clones of Pinot Noir from many blocks on our Estate vineyard were picked over a three week period. All batches were destemmed and were wild fermented in small open top fermenters. Ferments were hand plunged up to 5 times a day and then pressed to oak upon dryness. The wine underwent MLF in barrel and was then racked back to barrel for further maturation. 25% new French oak was used (the remainder 1 -4 year old barrels) and the wine was matured in these barrels for 10 months..

Tyrrell's `Special Release` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

Vineyard

Sourced predominately from our HVD vineyard with the remaining fruit coming from our Short Flat and 4 & 8 Acres vineyards. Vintage Conditions The 2017 vintage in the Hunter Valley was one of the best in recent memory, producing wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in Winter and Spring meant the vines had constant access to water, and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition when it was harvested. Winemaker’s Notes A mixture of both hand and machine harvesting, with the hand component forming the percentage of whole bunch fermentation we required. In this instance it was 20%. The machine picked fruit was placed on top of these whole bunches. The ferments were gently pumped over three times daily before gentle pressing and maturation for 9 months in French Oak barriques, 5% new.

Holm Oak `The Wizard` Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), TAS.

Although we take a pretty natural approach with all of our wines, the approach to making this wine was for minimal intervention. This wine is slowly evolving to include more of the new clones of Pinot that we have planted over the past 10 years. In particular, the MV6 and 115 add structure and elegance respectively to our older D5V12 clone which still makes up the base of this wine. 30% whole bunches were included in the ferments which was done in small open top fermenters. The ferments were allowed to start naturally and were then hand plunged up to 5 times a day. The wine was then basket pressed directly to barrel. Whilst we make wine specifically for the Wizard starting at pruning time the previous year we also have barrel selection tasting to ensure we select only the best barrels. We did this in January of 2018 and 20 barrels (60% new oak, 40% 1 year old) were chosen for this wine. The wine stayed in oak for a further 4 months and was bottled in May 2018.

Holm Oak Protege Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), TAS.

This Pinot made to be a lighter more fruit driven style of Pinot. To achieve this we have picked the fruit at moderate sugar levels when the fruit is displaying lovely fresh strawberry and cherry characters. The fruit is then de-stemmed and fermented on skins for 10 days. Specific yeasts which are known to enhance fruit aromatics are used to conduct the ferment. Following fermentation the wine was matured in tank prior to being bottled.

Abel's Tempest Pinot Noir 2016 (6 x 750mL), TAS.

Through the violent tempests that raged around the coast of Tasmania, Dutchman Abel Tasman navigated his flagship, the Heemskerk, finally sighting the island’s west coast in 1642. Many of Tasman’s attempts were thwarted by these huge winds which, while frustrating Tasman, are integral to creating the cool climate that Tasmania’s vineyards thrive in.

Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.

The Spring Vale "Melrose" Pinot Noir is made for those who like to taste the fruit of the vines, not overly extracted, not too oaky, just beautiful fruit fermented into wine then put into bottle!
