Nova Vita `Firebird` Pinot Noir 2014 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Grape growing is not without its challenges with a brief burst of high heat early February and then significant tropical rain to break the heat creating a challenge. However, mild and sunny ripening weather in the last 4 weeks of veraison has produced grapes with fantastic fruit characters and excellent balanced acidity. Well developed canopies and below average yields provided the perfect environment for the harvesting of a full flavoured Pinot Noir. brioche. The palate is a mix of citrus (in particular lime), white stone fruits, fresh apples and raw almonds with a slightly creamy texture. Barrel fermentation has added some complexity and textural richness, which is balanced by crisp natural acidity.

Nepenthe `Altitude` Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Pinot Noir is known to be a fickle and difficult grape, in both growing and winemaking. However the variety is well-suited to the cool slopes and ancient soils of the Adelaide Hills. The grapes handpicked in the morning and left to cold soak for 2-3 days. After pressing, a majority of the wine is transferred to French oak barrels of various ages to mature for approximately 10 months. Summer fruit flavours extend onto the palate complemented by subtle spice notes from the oak. This mid-weight wine is fresh and bright with a firm structure and long, savoury finish.

Riposte The Sabre Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

The grapes for The Sabre are from some of the oldest and best sited Pinot Noir vineyards in the high cool climate Lenswood and Piccadilly sub-regions of the Adelaide Hills. We work with our growers to produce moderate yields of fruit, well exposed to sunlight to maximise colour and ripe flavours.2016 was another early vintage due to an unusually warm spring, although the ripening period was relatively cool. Picking dates were from 27th February to 10th March. This was a shorter picking window than 2015 although starting two days later. As usual growers were requested to leaf pluck the morning (eastern side) of the Pinot vines soon after fruit set to give the optimum fruit exposure and aid the development of colour, tannins and ripe flavours. Again the newer clones (777, 114 and 115) ripened first, reinforcing our belief that they are best suited to the coolest sites.

Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.

Take it to the Grave Pinot Noir 2017 (24 x 250mL Cans), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Take it to the Grave is a joint venture between Nicholas Crampton and South Australian wine grower Jim Zerella created to deliver interesting and rewarding wines whilst challenging a few established rules and preconceptions. The Take it to the Grave Pinot Noir takes on one of the wine world’s most entrenched rules – that it is impossible to make high quality, varietally expressive but affordable Pinot Noir.

Nepenthe `Pinnacle` The Good Doctor Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Passionate admirer of fine Pinot Noir and Patriarch of Nepenthe, Dr Ed Tweddell, derived great pleasure from our Pinot. His untimely passing in 2005 cut short that enjoyment, but we continue his legacy with an unswerving commitment to making fine Pinot Noir in his name. Pinot noir is suited to high altitude (i.e. cool), low-vigour sites in the central Hills. All fruit is hand-picked and rapidly transported to the winery where fermentation occurs. After pressing the wine is allowed to settle for 24 hours, and then racked to French oak barrels with the balance made up of 1 to 2 year old barrels. Intensive barrel tasting and selection is undertaken to ensure only the best are selected for the Good Doctor.

Tyrrell's `Special Release` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

Vineyard

Sourced predominately from our HVD vineyard with the remaining fruit coming from our Short Flat and 4 & 8 Acres vineyards. Vintage Conditions The 2017 vintage in the Hunter Valley was one of the best in recent memory, producing wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in Winter and Spring meant the vines had constant access to water, and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition when it was harvested. Winemaker’s Notes A mixture of both hand and machine harvesting, with the hand component forming the percentage of whole bunch fermentation we required. In this instance it was 20%. The machine picked fruit was placed on top of these whole bunches. The ferments were gently pumped over three times daily before gentle pressing and maturation for 9 months in French Oak barriques, 5% new.

The Pawn El Desperado Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA.

Our first ever Vintage of El Desperado was 2011, and will always be known in Australian wine history as the vintage from hell, as many vineyards suc-cumb to the wet summer. Although we did not set out to make the El Desperado before that vintage, when you taste this wine, by hell you will be glad we did. This , our second Pinot Noir was made from grapes sourced from our Macclesfield vineyard and with warm days and cool nights, it provides ideal growing conditions for this varietal.A blend of 6 different clones, we have taken to a bit of winemaking in the vineyard with all 6 clones being harvested together and fermented as one complete blend. The wine was left on skins for 2 days, then fermented dry over the next 10 days.

Chain of Ponds `Section 400` Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills.

The Adelaide Hills Wine Region is fast becoming one of the leading wine regions in Australia for producing high quality Pinot Noir. This wine is true to character and style and is constantly being lauded as great value for money. On the palate there are juicy cherry and blueberry fruits, with slight stalky and plum flavours. These are all integrated well with good savoury flavours and spice, and the palate is supported by subtle spice and a hint of oak. The well-rounded medium-bodied palate with strong fine velvety tannins and good acid produce a very enjoyable wine suitable for many duck and lighter red meat dishes.
