Cloudy Bay `Te Wahi` Pinot Noir 2012 (6 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

Te Wahi means ‘The Place’ in Maori, a name chosen because they believe that great Pinot Noir speaks eloquently of its place of origin. Te Wahi is a different expression of Pinot Noir on Cloudy Bay's journey to discover the best vineyard sites and terroir for this grape variety in New Zealand, this time in Central Otago.

Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

The Central Otago High Country of New Zealand is over-run with rabbits. Sheep and rabbits coexisted on the land for some time but the sheep couldn't keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits. In the end they were hopelessly outnumbered and driven off the land- they were last seen heading north. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch - Mr. MacGregor, tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population by selling rabbit pies. Eventually he decided to plant some vines and make a decent Pinot Noir to go with all the rabbit pie he was eating.

Mud House Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.
Mud House Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

The South Island of New Zealand covers over 151,215km2 of rugged mountains, lakes, glaciers, ski fields and rivers. As proud guardians of the land our iconic vineyards are located in some of New Zealand's defining wine regions: Marlborough, Central Otago and the Waipara Valley. Each location has been selected with care and foresight; and as a result we aim to interfere as little as possible once the grapes arrive in the hands of the winemakers. Each vintage we create a portfolio of pure, expressive, balanced, vibrant and honest wines. The 2018 vintage started well with warm weather during flowering ensuring a well balanced crop. The following warm to hot summer meant for an early harvest for our Pinot Noir and it was a race to get the fruit off. The 2018 wines are approachable with a generous palate. OAK REGIME A portion of this wine was aged in French oak barriques, while the balance was matured in stainless steel to retain fruit character.

Tyrrell's `Special Release` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

Vineyard

Sourced predominately from our HVD vineyard with the remaining fruit coming from our Short Flat and 4 & 8 Acres vineyards. Vintage Conditions The 2017 vintage in the Hunter Valley was one of the best in recent memory, producing wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in Winter and Spring meant the vines had constant access to water, and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition when it was harvested. Winemaker’s Notes A mixture of both hand and machine harvesting, with the hand component forming the percentage of whole bunch fermentation we required. In this instance it was 20%. The machine picked fruit was placed on top of these whole bunches. The ferments were gently pumped over three times daily before gentle pressing and maturation for 9 months in French Oak barriques, 5% new.

Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW
Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.
