Lana by Pizzini Nebbiolo Barbera 2017 (12 x 750mL), King Valley. VIC.
Lana by Pizzini Nebbiolo Barbera 2017 (12 x 750mL), King Valley. VIC.

In 2011 Pizzini quietly released a new range of wines under the Lana label. These wines are made by Joel Pizzini. Joel is using some old winemaking techniques to make these wines so that some of them show more funky, earthy and savoury notes to the wines in the Pizzini range. These wines are made to be enjoyed with food, especially dishes with Italian flavours. We named this range after a special town in northern Italy called Lana. Lana is located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region and is situated between the towns of Bolzano and Merano.Prior to moving to Australia to forge a different future for their young family, Roberto and Rosetta Pizzini had settled in the northern Italian town of Lana. After marrying, Roberto found a job as a fitter and turner in a factory there, while Rosetta became a mother. Her third son Alfredo was born whilst they lived in Lana. Lana was, and still is thought of as their Italian home.

De Bortoli Down the Lane Merlot Durif Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL) SEA

Season

- The King Valley experienced a mild growing season following timely spring rains. Near perfect growing conditions for full flavour development of the fruit. Grapes harvested late march. Whilst in the Riverina a wet winter and spring provided plenty of moisture for a good growing season. A dry and warm summer allowed for a slow ripening retaining lots of fruit and natural acidity. Winemaking - Each variety was harvested separately at a range of baume levels to provide both freshness and intensity of the varietal flavours. Portions of each variety were matured with French and American oak for the touch of vanilla sweetness.

Blending was once seen by some as the poorer by-product of winemaking, but is now used to create wines which are greater than the sum of all parts. It is always the first red I put together each year and often takes the longest time to craft.A blend of 3 varieties, we take the finest characteristics of each, to compose a medium bodied wine that is a mouth filling textural flavour bomb, that will accompany any food on any occasion.

Vineyard: Tamaya Vineyard, Limarí Valley - ChileAge of the Vineyard: Vines planted in 1996Time of Harvest: Fourth week of AprilAltitude: 240 metres above sea levelHarvest Method: Manual harvest. Grapes are carefully transported to the cellar in small containers.Winemaking: The grapes were carefully transported to the cellar, where they were destemmed, lightly crushed, and deposited in stainless steel fermentation tanks. After a 3-day pre-fermentation cold soak, the must was inoculated with selected yeasts. Fermentation followed at 26°-28°C, with aerated pump overs of 1.5 times the tank volume in the beginning and reduced to half the volume at the end of the fermentation process. Upon completion of the alcoholic fermentation, the wine was left on its skins for an additional week to gain greater structure and character. The wine was then racked off its skins, which were pressed for a second fraction of wine. Part of the free run wine and some of the press wine were oak aged. The final blend included half oak-aged wine and half tank wine. The wine was then cold stabilized, filtered, and bottled.Winemaker: José Pablo MartinAlcohol: 13.5% vol.Volume: 1500 ml Residual sugars: n/aStandard Drinks: 16Peak drinking: 2018Best Served: 16°-18°CAgeing: 10 to 12 months with an average of 25% of new oak, 25% second use, 25% third use and 25% fourth use. 85% is French with different toasts, forest and coopers. 15% is American.
