Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.
Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

The average summer temperatures are ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. Our vineyards are on gentle slopes with rows running predominantly east-west.The soils are well drained, and are mainly classic terra rossa of brown earth over limestone. Quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon country. Our aim is to produce sustainable crops of intensely flavoured grapes by setting moderate crop levels and encouraging canopy growth. The wines are made in static and rotary fermenters that encourage good colour and fruit expression. The wine was matured with some time in oak barrels before final blending and bottling.

Lot No: 0056-2474106

Zonte`s Fooststep Canto di Lago Sangiovese Barbera 2013 (11 x 750mL) Fleurieu Peninsula55% Sangiovese, 45% Barbera Colour Light-bright purple red. Nose Peppercorn spice and a hint of cedar. Warm aromas of plums and cherries. An elegant nose driven by the fruit. Entry Rich, juicy and brambly red fruits. Some tangy cedar and spice characters.Middle Palate Lush round blackberry and plums, with a hint of raisins, all tempered with some light but typical Sangiovese savoury tannin. After Palate A medium bodied fruity finish with savoury, peppery overtones that taper out in the mouth with persistent long-grained fruit tannin.Finish Malt, cedar and intense black cherry... minutes later, the flavour still lingers. In Summary This is the ninth consecutive vintage of this wine and though it will drink great now, especially with anything off the grill or from the fornio, it should cellar as well as previous vintages. The Barbera is cool fermented on skins for seven days before being crushed and matured in stainless steel inorder to preserve the fresh, fruity notes of the variety. The Sangiovese is fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters after which the wine is assembled into tank and allowed to complete a natural malo-lactic fermentation before being pressed off. It is then transferred to well-seasoned hogsheads and aged for up to12 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration. This results in a melange with purity of fruit that is unpretentious and eminently satisfying to allow for regular indulgence. (SN:255627-1) (250684-623)
