Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Three Steps Shiraz 2014 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW.

Three Steps Shiraz 2014 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW.

Lot No: 0050-2478035

The Hope Estate winery, with about 100 acres of vineyards, is located in the vicinity of the village of Broke in the Lower Hunter Valley. It was created in 1994 by pharmacist Michael Hope, who abandoned his profession to devote himself entirely to wines. The fruit of this wine comes from vineyards in the Hunter Valley on basaltic soil, near the Wollemi mountain range. The company also owns vineyards in the states of Victoria and Western Australia. The Three Steps line celebrates the oenologist's work from the vineyard, past the winery, to the table of the connoisseur. (265190-4)

Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW
Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW

Vineyard The fruit for the 2016 Vat 9 Shiraz was sourced from Tyrrell’s super-premium vineyards on the Ashman’s property with an average vine age of 50 years. Predominately from the Weinkeller and Short Flat vineyards. The blocks were all handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before arriving at the winery. All the fruit was then destemmed but not crushed, followed by fermentation in traditional open-top concrete vats. After fermentation, the wines were matured in newer 2700L French oak casks for ten months.

Tyrrells Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW
Tyrrells Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW

Vineyard

This wine is a blend of premium Hunter Valley shiraz and cabernet grapes grown on and around the Tyrrell Ashmans property. Vintage Conditions The 2017 Shiraz Cabernet vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in Winter and Spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested. Winemaker’s Notes After fermentation in the traditional open vats, both parcels were matured separately before blending in December 2017. The blended wine then finished it’s maturation in French oak barriques until bottling in May 2018.

Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.

he Hunter Valley has a long history of wet years being followed immediately by scorchers, 1997 – 1998, 2002 – 2003, and 2004 – 2005. The feature of these years is the previous year has a wet autumn, dry winter followed by a very hot summer. Another feature is the very high quality of Shiraz.
