La Resistance! Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2015 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Average rating 2 out of 5 stars
1 REVIEW
Lot No: 0021-2477241

A vinous rematch of the famous 1811 BATTLE AT BARROSA RIDGE where Spain and France collided. La Re´sistance! takes up the fight for the traditional French varieties of the Barossa and pitches gnarly old vine GRENACHE, SYRAH & MOURVE`DRE into defence against the invading foreign marauders. Viticulture - Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourve`dre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel. Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston. The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourve`dre. (255940-5)

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2477241

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Lot No: 0025-2477241

Vinification

- Modern share-plate dining calls for a vibrant joven-style red blend. Not Your Grandma’s Red is a judicious blend of Grenache (42%) Tempranillo (31%) Shiraz (19%) Mataro (8%) picked earlier for freshness from old vines for depth of flavour. We utilise minimal-intervention winemaking including minimal sulfites. Matured in seasoned French and American hogshead barrels. Producer Note - The secret is out: Barossa Valley winemakers prefer blends. Yeah baby, THE BLEND IS BACK! Grandma’s flagon of claret was porty and stewed, now VIBRANT FRUIT is the order of the day. This is RED WINE FOR OUR TIMES! Unlabelled bottles. Labels on outer carton. Fined With Milk Products, some traces may remain. Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (265704-3)

Vintage

A dry winter, followed by heavy rains in spring, resulted in vines with healthy, balanced canopies on moist soils. A mild, early summer leading into a warmer period of veraison stopped vegetative growth, allowing vines to channel energy into the fruit. Hot weather conditions caused some stress in late summer, with balanced vines showing great resilience and high potential. Winemakers and growers did however observe crops to be 20-30% lower than the 2005 vintage. Reds were very fragrant with good acidity and length. Shiraz showed excellent quality. Vintage reports courtesy of the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia. Vineyard The vineyards are located in the Willunga district at the Southern end of McLaren Vale. The heavy grey loam soils over loam stone, intermixed with the black Biscay clay, combined with a maritime climate, contribute to an even ripening period and the development of rich fruit flavours and ripe tannins. Yield is around 4 tonnes an acre (70hl/ha). Vinification The fruit was fermented on skins at cool temperatures in order to capture and enhance the bright, pure berry fruit. Thee wine was then pressed and underwent partial barrel fermentation with natural malolactic fermentation occurring before the wine was racked. Background Mitolo Wines is a family owned business, established in 1999. It is borne of and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo’s vision: to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is the care in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the many different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with zealous passion that spares no effort or investment to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of elegance, purity and power. Winemaker Ben Glaezter became a partner in 2001. (265762-5)
