Patrizi Barbera d'Alba 2017 (12 x 750mL), Piedmont, Italy.

Souced from vines grown on clay-chalk soils around Alba, and the neighbouring villages that form the Langhe plain and part of Roero. Guyot-trained with a vine density of 3,500 vines per hectare. There is a green harvest in May and July. No irrigation is used. Grapes are hand harvested in the middle of September. The Barbera grapes are sorted and selected, crushed softly and the stalks separated. The must is piped into steel tanks where it is fermented at a temperature of about 27 degrees for 10 days. Production continues with a lighter fermentation until the consumption of sugars is complete. The wine then spends around 6/8 months in steel tanks before bottling. This allows the wine to settle, yet retain vibrant fruit character.

Piazzo Barbera d'Alba 2016 (12 x 750mL), Piedmont, Italy.

There are areas on the hills of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio and Guarene where priority is given to the Barbera vine, Vineyards from which a strictly traditional winemaking process produces this blend: a Barbera d’Alba showing shades of ruby and scarlet, with frequent violet nuances. Its expansive, stimulating nose is markedly fruity, with notes reminiscent of plum and jam. Floral overtones of rose petals accompany slight spicy hints of pepper and cinnamon. The taste appeals for its great structure, warm body and long aromatic finish.Barbera d’ Alba makes a good match for hors-d’oeuvres and well-structured starters like lasagne, and delicate or grilled meat dishes.

Cascina Fontana Barbera d'Alba 2015 (12 x 750mL), Piedmont, Italy.

Barbera, more than any other wine, is ‘il vino del contadino’, humble yet profoundly tied to a majestic land that gives its birth, a wine that truly represents the lifeblood of the people of Le Langhe. More complex than Dolcetto, with greater body, structure, acidity and extract, our Barbera d’Alba is a wine that is never less than vivid and direct, full of the character and personality of the land that gives its birth.
