Masso Antico Primitivo 2017 (12 x 750mL), Apulia, Italy.

The grapes used for Masso Antico Primitivo are grown using the vine training method known as “Alberello”, which has ancient origins and is typical of the Mediterranean area of Italy. It was developed to compensate the lack of water and the very hot climate. The now very rare Alberello system represents a very important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of Apulia. The rigorous hand-picking is followed by a meticulous selection of the destemmed grapes. The grape withering on plants, favored by the sea wind, and a slow maturation in French oak barrels for about 6 months results in an outstanding full-bodied wine with soft tannins that release vanilla notes in the finish.

Moccagatta Barbaresco 1998 (1x 750mL), Italy.

Lot No: 0070-2477331

Moccagatta Barbaresco 1998 (1x 750mL), Italy. Cork closure. The 1998 Barbaresco Basarin is an elegant, light-styled effort with an amber edge already noticeable in its medium ruby color. Scents of tobacco as well as ripe strawberry and cherry fruit are present, but the finish is attenuated and lean, without the depth and body expected in a top Barbaresco cru.

Fontanafredda Barolo DOCG 1990 (1x 750mL),Piedmont. 5 Star Prov.

Lot No: 0062-2477331

Fontanafredda is an historic estate in the commune of the same name in Piedmont, in northwest Italy. It has long been regarded as one of the great producers of the region, and has a large range of wines including single-vineyard Barolos, Barbaresco, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Moscato d'Asti. The estate was established in 1858 when the land was purchased by King Vittorio Emanuele II of Sardinia (later the first king of Italy) for Rosa Vercellana, a drum major's daughter with whom he had fallen in love. Rosa was made Countess of Mirafiori and Fontanafredda a year later. The wine business started in 1878 under her management and that of the king's son Emanuele Guerrieri, the Count of Mirafiore. The estate vineyards total 85 hectares (210 acres), and are located on a variety of soils in Serralunga d'Alba, Diano d'Alba, Barolo and Murisengo. They are mostly planted to Nebbiolo along with Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato. Fontanafredda's winery comprises 19th Century cellars with large oak casks and stainless steel vats dedicated to red wine production, and newer buildings with modern facilities for white and sparkling wines.Fontanafredda's range is headed by three single-vineyard Cru Barolos: La Rosa, La Villa, and La Lazzarito. On top of this, the house makes wines under a range of other well-known Piedmont appellations, as well as a blend of Riesling and Nascetta. Other ranges include the core "Stripes" and "Tradition" series and the Briccotondo brand, and there are also three Grappas and a couple of Barolo Chinato wines. (264591-29)

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2003 (1x 750mL) IT

Lot No: 0064-2477331

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2003 (1x 750mL), Italy. Cork closureThe 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva awards a truly exceptional emotional charge for reasons that go beyond the technical tasting attributes of the wine. There is the nostalgic recognition that this would be one of the last vintages made, all hands on deck, by Giuseppe Quintarelli before his struggle with Parkinson`s disease and his death at 84 in 2012. I tasted bottle number 4,780 of only 5,973 made. The Riserva is only produced in truly exceptional years and represents the single-best barrel of the bunch. Sadly the wine is heavily saddled with overripe aromas and a strong blast of 17% alcohol that are hard to see past. Of course, 2003 was an extremely hot vintage. The bouquet here is overplayed with heavy-footed aromas of dried fruit, smoked cedar wood, crushed brimstone and balsam herb. Given the greatest of the estate`s other wines, my expectations of this wine were not met. - The Wine Advocate

Marcarini La Serra, Barolo 1989 (1x 750mL), 5 Star Prov

Lot No: 0068-2477331

Piedmont vineyards©MarcariniMarcarini is an Italian wine producer in the northwestern wine-producing region of Piedmont. The estate specializes in producing wines from the native grape varieties of this region: Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Arneis and Moscato Bianco. The Marcarini estate comprises 25 hectares (62 acres) of vineyards spanning both the Langhe and Roero wine districts. One of the most renowned of these is the 4.5-ha (11-acre) Brunate vineyard that was established in the 14th Century. The vineyard is planted to Nebbiolo vines that occupy south- to southwest-facing slopes at altitudes of approximately 1000ft (300m) above sea level. The grapes cultivated at the Brunate plot act as the source of the estate's single-vineyard Barolo Brunate wine, a traditionally made Barolo wine that spends approximately two years in oak barrel. Marcarini makes two more Barolo wines: another single-vineyard Barolo wine from its 4-ha (10-acre) La Serra vineyard and a Barolo Chinato.Marcarini's red wine portfolio also includes several Dolcetto d'Alba and Barbera d'Alba wines from its well-established vineyards in La Morra and Neviglie. Indeed, the Boschi di Berri vineyard is over a century old and was planted to Dolcetto in the latter part of the 19th Century. Marcarini also produces a semi-sweet, sparkling Moscato d'Asti, as well as a dry Roero Arneis wine. (264591-47)

VIETTI Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 1997 (1x 750mL), 5 Star Prov. Cork.

Lot No: 0005-2477331

Vietti is a wine producer in Piedmont in northwest Italy. It is particularly known for its range of single-vineyard Barolo wines, its Barberas, and also its association with the Arneis variety. The range-topping Barolo Riserva Villero has gained numerous awards and high ratings, with the 2007 vintage receiving a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate. The estate produced its first wines under the family name in 1919, and was one of the first to export Barolo wines to the USA. In the 1950s, Alfredo Currado (who married into the Vietti family) took over production and became one of the first in Barolo to release single-vineyard wines. He is also regarded as the 'Father of Arneis', having reinvigorated interest in this near-lost variety in the late 1960s. The Vietti example is an elegant, unoaked wine with floral and citrus hints.Vietti makes a range of wines from the area: the Arneis, a Moscato d'Asti, Dolcetto, five Barbera wines, a Nebbiolo, a single Barbaresco and six Barolos. Most of the grapes for these wines come from sandy-chalky-clay vineyards in Castiglione Falletto. Three of the single-vineyard wines, including the Villero Riserva, are traditionally styled and aged in large Slavonian oak vats, while the slightly more modernist Brunate and Lazzarito wines are partially aged in French oak as well.
