Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

St Clementin Réserve Benoit XII Châteauneuf du Pape 2015 (3x 750mL), Rhone

Lot No: 0034-2478165

In the XIVe century Pope Jean XXII, chose Chateauneuf as the location for their summer residences, and then decided to plant vines on the stony land which surrounded their landholdings. For a long time the wine production remained a secret but started to become well known in the XVIIIe century but it was in 1929, that it was officially recognized and bestowed with it's own appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This appellation means that the wine production in Chateauneuf du Pape is subject to strict controls to ensure that the 55 vineyards produce an extremely fine wine.Located between Avignon and Orange, Chateauneuf-du-Pape spreads out at the foot of the remains of it's fortress castle.. The village looks over the plain of Comtat and the 3 000 hectares of vine fields. The village is almost completely dedicated to its world famous wine "Chateauneuf du Pape" which is also part of the similarly famous Cotes du Rhone. (263345-13)

Penfolds `Bin 389` Cabernet Shiraz 2008 (3 x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0018-2477330

A welcome wet winter and a moderate, dry spring encourage steady early season growth, setting up for a text- book harvest. Cool and dry conditions during the start of summer were describe as perfect, conducive to excellent flavour, colour and phenolic development. A record 15 day heatwave, starting on the 3rd March created a major interruption, inducing a vintage of two distinct halves - a statement pertaining to the profound differences in quality of fruit picked before and after the heat spell. Weighted- average vintage charts may not do justice to the South Australian harvest in 2008. Penfolds reds will. (265820-61)

Penfolds `Bin 389` Cabernet Shiraz 2012 (3x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0021-2477330

Vintage Conditions

Most areas of South Australia, including Wrattonbully and the Barossa Valley, were impacted by lower thanaverage rainfall across the winter period. This resulted in ideal stress through spring flowering. Variableconditions across all regions through October to December, merged to a mild summer with a few shortperiods of heat. The mild daytime temperatures and cool evenings across most of the ripening periodallowed impressive flavour development without inflated baumés. Balanced canopies and fruit load providedeven ripening throughout veraison. Warm dry conditions continued throughout harvest allowing fruit to bepicked in optimal condition. Smaller berry and bunch sizes were noticeable in most regions. This, coupledwith favourable weather conditions, induced great results for traditional quality markers – colour, tanninprofile, fruit concentration and flavour depth. (265682-11)

Penfolds `Bin 389` Cabernet Shiraz 2004 (3 x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0013-2477330

Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s Grange’ or ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds skill in balancing fruit and oak. A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity. Penfolds 'Magill Estate' Shiraz 1988 (3x 750ml)

Lot No: 0091-2477330

The wine derives its name from the historic Magill Vineyard located in the Adelaide foothills, South Australia. It is the birhplace of Penfolds and the first vineyard established by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844. The vineyard is now 6 hectares in size and consists entirely of Shiraz vines, aged between 25 and 45 years. This wine shows the elegant structure that results from the use of Shiraz grapes picked a little early and is a morecontemporary and refined style compared to Penfolds' traditional red wines. Screwcap closure.Hewitson wines set apart from others is their predominately dry-grown vineyards dating back to the 1800`s have very deep root systems. These roots in some cases go down ten metres into the sub soil. These vines have their own biological clock and it is of little consequence what is going on around them above the earth.
