Stoneleigh `Latitude` Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

The Stoneleigh Latitude range heralds from an area in Marlborough known as the 'Golden Mile'. This 'Golden Mile' is a fertile strip of land covered with ancient riverstones and is highly regarded for its outstanding grape-growing conditions. The resulting wines are aromatically lifted, as well as riper in spectrum, a result of higher concentration of the stones in the area and the effect these have on the vines.

Louis Max Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Louis Max, of Russian origin, founded his wine house in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1859. During the first half of the 20th century, the house of Louis Max enjoyed widespread acclaim and recognition for outstanding quality in the range of wines produced. The house has always retained a family structure and today, Laurent Max, great-grandson of founder Louis Max, together with a motivated team, has doted itself with all the means of success. The house owns or operates over eighty-seven hectare, or two hundred and fifty acres of Burgundy vineyard. The eccentric Laurent Max has invested heavily in the vinification facilities in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and, more importantly has installed the young and passionate Brigitte Putzu as head winemaker at Louis Max. Brigitte has spent over sixteen years at Louis Max, formerly as assistant winemaker, and has a long relationship with the 87 hectares of vineyards and clos that Louis Max controls. Brigitte’s wines illustrate her meticulousness in their ripeness, purity and balance. Since the 1996 harvest, Brigitte has had complete control of vineyard management and vinification for Louis Max. No single vineyard is harvested without Brigitte’s nod – only when ripeness is perfect both technically and physiologically.

A specific area of vines on The Nepean Block was selected for this wine. Historically we have found this area has produced some amazing flayour profiles, all MV6 clone. We started the growing season with a light fertilzing and the natural rainfall was adequate. The vines had been cane pruned to 18 buds and trained to an open VSP canopy. no watering was necessary this season. A light summer pruning maintained the open canopy and bunch counts restricted to one bunch per shoot. The grapes were hand-picked relatively early on 4th March.

Grape growing is not without its challenges with a brief burst of high heat early February and then significant tropical rain to break the heat creating a challenge. However, mild and sunny ripening weather in the last 4 weeks of veraison has produced grapes with fantastic fruit characters and excellent balanced acidity. Well developed canopies and below average yields provided the perfect environment for the harvesting of a full flavoured Pinot Noir. brioche. The palate is a mix of citrus (in particular lime), white stone fruits, fresh apples and raw almonds with a slightly creamy texture. Barrel fermentation has added some complexity and textural richness, which is balanced by crisp natural acidity.

J. Moreau & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.
J. Moreau & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Already cultivated by the Gauls at the time of the Roman conquest, this important grape variety goes far back in the history of the vine in France. Mentioned for the first time under the name “Pinot Noir” in 1373, it is also known by the names of “Franc Noirien” or “Plant Fin” in the Côte d’Or, and “Franc Pinot” or “Petit Vérot” in the Yonne. It has made a reputation for itself among the red wines of Burgundy where it is vinified alone or blended with 15% Chardonnay. In Champagne, it is blended with the Chardonnay or Meunier varietals. Introduced to the Loire region in the Middle Ages at the same time as Chardonnay, it became established in the Orléanais and Touraine regions and remains the red varietal of the red and rosé wines of Sancerre.

Vista Bodega Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), Chile

Chile's unique geographical and climatic conditions offer it many advantages for wine production. The country is very long and thin - some 4500 km, yet it is only on average 150km wide, with the land sandwiched between the high, snow-capped Ands Mountain range and cold Pacific Ocean. The water temperature of Pacific is kept significantly colder by the Humbolt Current that flows up the Chilean coastline from Antarctica. The climate and soil conditions are almost perfect for grape growing;the influence and close proximity of cold air from the Andes and cool sea breezes cannot be overemphasised. Rainfall is restricted predominantly to the winter months, and snow-melt from the Andes provides unlimited pure water for the vineyard irrigation. These benign conditions and absence of phylloxera prevent many vine diseases.Because of the temperate climate and sharp day-night temperature variations, the ripening season may be several weeks longer than normal, allowing grapes to ripen more evenly and with greater fruit concentration and skin pigmentation - often resulting in higher level of antioxidants. Now Chile has become one of the world's prime resources of varietal wine.

Vintage Conditions

The 2013/14 growing season began with one of the hottest starts on record until the end of December, with rapid even growth, a good flowering and subsequent fruit set. Then through to the end of February was cooler than average with the vineyards achieving good berry development. March was warmer than the norm and we saw full development of flavour and concentration. Each parcel harvested in optimum conditions despite some pressure from late season rain.

For the Pawn, we sacrificed making our full range of wines that year to create a brand new style wine. Although we did not set out to make the El Desperado before that vintage, when you taste this wine, by hell you will be glad we did. This , our second Pinot Noir was made from grapes sourced from our Macclesfield vineyard and with warm days and cool nights, it provides ideal growing conditions for this varietal.A blend of 6 different clones, we have taken to a bit of winemaking in the vineyard with all 6 clones being harvested together and fermented as one complete blend. The South Island of New Zealand covers over 151,215km2 of rugged mountains, lakes, glaciers, ski fields and rivers. As proud guardians of the land our iconic vineyards are located in some of New Zealand's defining wine regions: Marlborough, Central Otago and the Waipara Valley. Each location has been selected with care and foresight; and as a result we aim to interfere as little as possible once the grapes arrive in the hands of the winemakers. Each vintage we create a portfolio of pure, expressive, balanced, vibrant and honest wines. The 2018 vintage started well with warm weather during flowering ensuring a well balanced crop. The following warm to hot summer meant for an early harvest for our Pinot Noir and it was a race to get the fruit off. The 2018 wines are approachable with a generous palate.
