History

Swiggit & Co. was formed by a group of winemakers who believe it’s important to make delicious wine to enjoy every day. Vintage 2017 was a late and wet vintage in McLaren Vale. Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0016-2484939

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (270195-3)

McGuigan Black Label Cabernet Merlot 2016 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0028-2484939

CABERNET MERLOT 2016

Rich, generous and approachable, the McGuigan Black Label range is your contemporary guide to Australia's most popular wine varieties. Whether it be a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, a full-bodied Chardonnay or Australia's #1 selling bottled red wine, McGuigan Black Label Red, every bottle of McGuigan Black Label is packed full of varietal flavour, proving that you need not be a connoisseur to enjoy the wine of your choice for any occasion. VINTAGE CONDITIONS The fruit for this wine was sourced from our vineyards in South Eastern Australia. The climate is hot with high evaporation rates and generally low rainfall, making irrigation essential. The climate is also continental, resulting in long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights. Long sunshine hours ensure fruit ripens fully and low relative humidity results in little incidence of disease. WINEMAKING This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, full-flavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from our various dry and irrigated vineyards and was harvested at night. The grapes were fermented at cool temperatures for a period of 5-7 days. This allows the fruit flavours to be nurtured and entables retention of varietal characteristics. After fermentation, the wine was matured in stainless steel tanks and oak prior to final blending. (270293-25)

WINEMAKING

Merlot grapes from selected vineyards were harvested at optimum maturity to maximise varietal fruit flavours and supple tannins. Fruit was fermented and left on skins in static and rotary fermenters for seven days to maximise colour and flavour extraction. After primary fermentation the wines were soft pressed and underwent malolactic fermentation before being aged in French oak for six months before being blended and filtered prior to bottling. VINTAGE The vintage 2019 growing season was one of the driest on record. Controlled winter watering and careful monitoring of vine stress levels was key to a successful crop. Temperatures tended to be cooler in spring and early summer which caused a slower start to the season, as temperatures began to rise in late Jan early Feb ripening moved along a little quicker and the team were grateful the vines had sufficient canopies to protect the fruit through to maturity. The reds from this vintage show excellent depth of colour and fabulous tannins, whilst the whites display a rich array of aromatics and bright fresh fruit flavours. (271214-3)

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0064-2484939

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (269344-10)

Vintage Conditions

Weather conditions were mild during summer, with a few short periods of hot weather. Matured for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Penthouse Wines is a collaboration between John Crossland of the Central Coast of California, and Randal Tomich of South Australia. FERMENTATION AND AGING

The grapes are carefully hand-picked at the end of August. The pickers revisit the vineyards over and over, only selecting those bunches of grapes at their optimum ripeness. The grapes are de-stemmed, then very gently crushed, causing as little damage as possible to the skins. Very frequent remontage takes place before and during fermentation to obtain optimum colour extraction and soft tannins. There is a total of 15 days skin contact before racking. Specially selected yeasts are added in order to start the fermentation which is temperature controlled at 26-28°C for 10 days. After racking the wine is inoculated with bacteria to induce malolactic fermentation at 20°C for 20-30 days. (271667-1)

La Francette Merlot NV

Merlot is a dark blue-coloured wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the colour of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin. Vietti Lazzarito Barolo DOCG 1998 (1x 750mL), Italy. 5 Star Prov!

Lot No: 0015-2484979

Provenance: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Vietti is a wine producer in Piedmont in northwest Italy. It is particularly known for its range of single-vineyard Barolo wines, its Barberas, and also its association with the Arneis variety. The range-topping Barolo Riserva Villero has gained numerous awards and high ratings, with the 2007 vintage receiving a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate. The estate produced its first wines under the family name in 1919, and was one of the first to export Barolo wines to the USA. In the 1950s, Alfredo Currado (who married into the Vietti family) took over production and became one of the first in Barolo to release single-vineyard wines. He is also regarded as the 'Father of Arneis', having reinvigorated interest in this near-lost variety in the late 1960s. The Vietti example is an elegant, unoaked wine with floral and citrus hints.Vietti makes a range of wines from the area: the Arneis, a Moscato d'Asti, Dolcetto, five Barbera wines, a Nebbiolo, a single Barbaresco and six Barolos. Most of the grapes for these wines come from sandy-chalky-clay vineyards in Castiglione Falletto. Three of the single-vineyard wines, including the Villero Riserva, are traditionally styled and aged in large Slavonian oak vats, while the slightly more modernist Brunate and Lazzarito wines are partially aged in French oak as well. BAVA Cocconato Barolo 1990 (1x 750mL) Italy. Cork. 5 Star Prov

Lot No: 0006-2484979

Provenance: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont, northwestern Italy, the most notable of which are Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as "tar and roses". A less obvious characteristic, visible only over time, is their tendency to lose color. Within just a few years of vintage, most Nebbiolo wines begin fading from deep, violet-tinged ruby to a beautiful brick orange.Nebbiolo is the quintessential Piedmontese wine grape – the dominant variety in five of the region's DOCGs and numerous DOCs (see Italian Wine Labels). Even its name evokes the region's foothills on cool autumn mornings, when the valleys and vineyards lie hidden under a ghostly blanket of nebbia (fog). The name is very apt for this late-ripening variety, which is harvested later in the year than Piedmont's other key varieties (Barbera and particularly Dolcetto), in foggy, wintry weather conditions.
