Masso Antico Primitivo 2017 (12 x 750mL), Apulia, Italy.

The grapes used for Masso Antico Primitivo are grown using the vine training method known as “Alberello”, which has ancient origins and is typical of the Mediterranean area of Italy. It was developed to compensate the lack of water and the very hot climate. The now very rare Alberello system represents a very important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of Apulia. The rigorous hand-picking is followed by a meticulous selection of the destemmed grapes. The grape withering on plants, favored by the sea wind, and a slow maturation in French oak barrels for about 6 months results in an outstanding full-bodied wine with soft tannins that release vanilla notes in the finish.

Piazzo `Mugiot` Barbera d'Alba 2016 (12 x 750mL), Piedmont, Italy.

The separate vinification of the various parcels over the years has made it possible to identify Mugiot as the vineyard with the best characteristics for the production of a cellarable Barbera d’Alba. This explains the name given to this special varietal selection.Mugiot in the Piedmontese dialect means “little pile”, which was the nickname given to the winery’s founder, Armando Piazzo, who used to heap the wood he sold into little piles. The Barbera bears the name Mugiot because in the same way it represents just a small part of the total production of Barbera. Its ruby red colour is tinged with garnet nuances that become more noticeable on ageing, while the nose combines spicy, fruity and ethereal sensations, redolent with blackberry, jam, green pepper and vanilla, along with rose and underlying toasted notes. A warm flavour fills the mouth with softness, providing excellent structure and length. With its elegant complexity, this wine is good for serving throughout a meal, from hot appetizers to starters and well-structured mains.

Patrizi Barbera d'Alba 2017 (12 x 750mL), Piedmont, Italy.

Souced from vines grown on clay-chalk soils around Alba, and the neighbouring villages that form the Langhe plain and part of Roero. Guyot-trained with a vine density of 3,500 vines per hectare. There is a green harvest in May and July. No irrigation is used. Grapes are hand harvested in the middle of September. The Barbera grapes are sorted and selected, crushed softly and the stalks separated. The must is piped into steel tanks where it is fermented at a temperature of about 27 degrees for 10 days. Production continues with a lighter fermentation until the consumption of sugars is complete. The wine then spends around 6/8 months in steel tanks before bottling. This allows the wine to settle, yet retain vibrant fruit character.

Allegrini Campo dei Lecci Toscana 2014 (6 x 750mL), Italy

Grape varieties: 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot, 5% CanaioloAnother vintage to remember, defined by many as one of the earliest on record in Bolgheri. After a rather mildwinter, albeit with heavy rainfall, the spring months enjoyed regular rainfall that fostered the uniform development of the buds, which had already appeared in early March. The summer season was dry and airywith some refreshing rain in early September that enabled the grapes to ripen in perfect health. During thepre-harvest period, broad variations in day-night temperatures encouraged phenolic and aromatic ripening whilst maintaining elevated acidity. Vintage 2016 promises intriguing wines with marked varietal personality, good structure and great ageing potential.
