Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley
Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

The grapes are sourced from the Old Hillside vineyard’s mature 50 year old vines (previously owned by the Stevens family). come from the Stevens family owned Old Hillside vineyard in Pokolbin. The vineyard contains the Old Patch, which was planted in 1867 and is the oldest producing vineyard in NSW.Medium to full bodied with a lively, intense purple colour. Black cherry, rapsberry and fresh, spicy flavours dominate the palate with a vibrant, fresh acidity that make the wine a wonderful example of the modern, balanced style of Hunter Valley shiraz.THE STORY OF SINGLE VINEYARD RANGEThe same soil, same rainfall and same temperatures of a single vineyard produce a consistency of flavour throughout the wine. Our Single Vineyard wines are only made in years when nature contrives to produce fruit of such outstanding quality that our winemakers will set parcels aside to be separately bottled. In 1993, Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal with the Stevens family to use two of their iconic vineyards. It was, and still is, a deal sealed by a handshake. With some planted in 1867, these may be the oldest producing vines in the Hunter

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2004 (2x 750mL), SA . Screwcap.

Lot No: 0014-2487167

Penfold's alternative expression of Shiraz, regionally appellated and matured in French Oak.The development of Penfolds Red Winemaking Trial (RWT) reflects extraordinary progress in viticulture and winemaking. The two disciplines are increasingly intertwined, as growers and winemakers work together in search of optimum balance, ripeness and flavour.RWT draws fruit from 20 to 100 year-old vineyards arcing across the west and north-west of the Barossa Valley, mostly independently grown. The best vineyards produce fruit of voluptuous intensity, ripe tannins, and juicy flavours. The RWT Shiraz has a very seductive style with a plum/blueberry fruit profile and fine ripe tannins underpinned by savoury French oak.Since its first vintage in 1997, collectors have recognised the sheer class of RWT. Already the wine has a strong secondary market following, illustrating its collectability and cellaring potential. (272237-24)

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 1985 (1 x 750mL), SA. Cork

Lot No: 0008-2487167

Bin 707 is a Cabernet Sauvignon reflection of Grange — intensely-flavoured fruit; completion of fermentation and maturation in new oak; expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 when fruit was directed to other wines, nor in 1981, 1995, 2000, 2003 or 2011 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 retains a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s finest Cabernets. (272282-30)
