Mr Riggs The Truant Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Mr Riggs The Truant Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0043-2484778

History

John William Riggs was born in Dorset 1814, and was the ‘Mr. Riggs’ – Ben’s great- great- great grandfather. This influential man was a person who didn’t think highly of the school curriculum, but often focused more on wagging school. He managed to wag school at the age of seven, then commenced working for a living at the rate of one shilling a week. This was however only a minor inconvenience for ‘The Truant’ who signed with an ‘X’. In time, he became master of one of South Australia’s outstanding farming enterprises in the early years of settlement. Vineyard The Shiraz grapes used to make ‘The Truant has been sourced from select vineyards in McLaren Vale. With dominant winter rainfall and warm, dry summers of low humidity tempered by the proximity to the Gulf St.Vincent, McLaren Vale has one of the most consistent climates in which to grow premium wine grapes, particularly Shiraz. Clockwork Ministry of Leisure Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750ml) Swan Valley, WA

Lot No: 0015-2484778

Oakover Wines is a family-operated, boutique winery located in the heart of the Swan Valley. The historic estate was one of the original properties established in the Swan Valley in the 1830’s and has been continuously used for grape growing since it was first cleared by convict labour. Some of the Swan Valley’s first grapevines were planted on Oakover land by Samuel Moore in the early 1850’s.Inspired by Samuel Moore, and with three generations of Swan Valley heritage behind them, the Yukich family acquired the estate off Houghtons in 1990 and Oakover Wines was born. The family has been involved in grape growing in the Swan Valley since Nicholas Yukich purchased his first vineyard in 1929.Today, Oakover Wines reflects a synergy between past and present. Mark Yukich and sons Graeme and Kim have continued the proud family tradition of growing quality grapes and producing premium wines reflecting the ‘terroir’ of the region. This culminated in the establishment of new state of the art winery in 2002.True varietal character, depth of flavour and approachability, guide the philosophy of the winemaking team. In turn, the future for Oakover Wines lies in its ability to continue to produce quality wines that offer customers exceptional quality value for money. (269807-9)

Sheppards Lane Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Langhorne Creek, SA

Sheppards Lane Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Langhorne Creek, SA

Lot No: 0062-2484778

History

The “S” depicted on the front label represents the colours of vibrant and fertile soil found in South Australia’s Langhorne Creek wine region. Famous around the world, South Australia produces superb red wines and our Sheppards Lane Shiraz is no exception. Region Langhorne Creek has a cool maritime climate, notably cooler than McLaren Vale and the Barossa. This is due to a wind known as the Lake Doctor coming off Lake Alexandrina travelling across the Antarctic and Southern Ocean to the Langhorne Creek vines. Soil throughout the region is predominantly deep, alluvial sandy loams, with patches of black, self-mulching clays. Vintage The 2017 Langhorne Creek vintage was reasonably long and slow. The season had high winter and spring rainfall, which led to the extended, cool ripening phase. Harvest for reds began nearly a month later than the previous vintage. Fruit quality was excellent, with Shiraz being one of the highlights of the vintage. (268368-4)

St Kilda Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Riverina, NSW

Lot No: 0063-2484778

Vintage

A record wet start to winter and spring gave soil moisture a good head start to the warming season. The increased cloud cover kept us below average in the solar radiation stakes, which made for a long ripening period, perfect for retaining natural acidity. The summer was dry and warm to keep the fruit fruity and the diseases at bay. Winemaking Harvested when the fruit is showing vibrant berry flavours, then fermented on skins for 5-6 days at 20-24ºC with a combination of American and French oak. (270084-1)

From post war farming and apple growing, the region is now a well-established area for viticulture with the first vines planted here in the late 1960’s. Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Jim Barry `The Cover Drive` Cabernet Sauvignon 2017(6 x 750mL), SA.

On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Soon after Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from our family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable.
