Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2478119

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Winemaking

- Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Followingfermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Our vineyard and winemaking teams worked tirelessly during vintage 2017 to ensureall varieties were harvested at optimal flavour development, producing elegant wines with lower alcohol levels which we are sure will delight our consumers. Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750ml). SA

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak.Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘Trial’ RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. They have the precision, concentration, persistency and balance to age for many years. Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Mark's Vineyard .8 Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) Adelaide Hills, SA

Lot No: 0031-2478037

This single vineyard has become one of Australia’s most respected cool climate Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay producers. Our parcels of fruit receive high input viticulture, hand-pruning, shoot thinning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning, multiple wire-lifts, low cropping levels and hand picking. The Vineyard is under the ownership of Matthew Hill-Smith and his daughter Christobel, representing seven generations of continuous Hill-Smith family winemaking since 1849. Point Eight refers to the total plantings of Shiraz on this single vineyard being .8 of a hectare. After hand picking, 90% of the fruit was destemmed and 10% left as whole bunches. The fruit was fermented in small open fermenters which were hand plunged daily before being basket pressed and matured in French Oak barrels for approximately 11 months. Marko’s second vintage of Shiraz is sourced from point eight of a hectare. The wine displays dark fruits of plum and rhubarb with an uncanny coffee and chocolate nose. (264158-1)
