Vista Bodega Pinot Noir 2019 (12 x 750mL), Chile

Vista Bodega Pinot Noir 2019 (12 x 750mL), Chile

Lot No: 0010-2487081

Chile's unique geographical and climatic conditions offer it many advantages for wine production. The country is very long and thin - some 4500 km, yet it is only on average 150km wide, with the land sandwiched between the high, snow-capped Ands Mountain range and cold Pacific Ocean. The water temperature of Pacific is kept significantly colder by the Humbolt Current that flows up the Chilean coastline from Antarctica. The climate and soil conditions are almost perfect for grape growing;the influence and close proximity of cold air from the Andes and cool sea breezes cannot be overemphasised. Rainfall is restricted predominantly to the winter months, and snow-melt from the Andes provides unlimited pure water for the vineyard irrigation. These benign conditions and absence of phylloxera prevent many vine diseases.Because of the temperate climate and sharp day-night temperature variations, the ripening season may be several weeks longer than normal, allowing grapes to ripen more evenly and with greater fruit concentration and skin pigmentation - often resulting in higher level of antioxidants. Now Chile has become one of the world's prime resources of varietal wine. Lot No: 0009-2487081

Viticulture and Winemaking

The 2018 vintage will be remembered as one of the warmest on record, with continual hot days throughout February and March and rain coming just before and during harvest. A very unusual harvest, as the Pinot Noir is normally the last to be picked, this year, due to unseasonably warm conditions the fruit was the first of the vines. We picked the grapes when the flavours were at optimum, to ensure we preserved the fruit flavours in the wine. We used a select de-stemmer harvester to softly handle the fruit. Once pressed off skins, the juice was then fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast strains to preserve the inherent delicate fruit flavours. Following fermentation, the wine was aged on light yeast lees to increase palate weight and complexity before it was bottled for enjoyment. (271267-4)

Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

The 2017 growing season began with ideal spring conditions; warm temperatures and few frost events encouraged good canopy growth. Settled weather over flowering led to high potential crops, fruit thinning was widely employed to reduce yield and achieve optimum vine balance. Fastidious canopy management throughout the mild and sunny growing season ensured fruit developed, then ripened, at an ideal rate. The excellent weather during the ripening season was interrupted by rain events during the harvest. The single-minded quality focus of the viticulture and winemaking teams, with hour by hour assessment, led to optimum picking decisions. Our low-yielding, early-ripening vineyards with their open canopies, stood us in good stead in what was a tricky vintage across Marlborough and New Zealand.

Mud House Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.
Mud House Pinot Noir 2018 (6 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

The South Island of New Zealand covers over 151,215km2 of rugged mountains, lakes, glaciers, ski fields and rivers. As proud guardians of the land our iconic vineyards are located in some of New Zealand's defining wine regions: Marlborough, Central Otago and the Waipara Valley. Each location has been selected with care and foresight; and as a result we aim to interfere as little as possible once the grapes arrive in the hands of the winemakers. Each vintage we create a portfolio of pure, expressive, balanced, vibrant and honest wines. The 2018 vintage started well with warm weather during flowering ensuring a well balanced crop. The following warm to hot summer meant for an early harvest for our Pinot Noir and it was a race to get the fruit off. The 2018 wines are approachable with a generous palate. OAK REGIME A portion of this wine was aged in French oak barriques, while the balance was matured in stainless steel to retain fruit character.

Kumeu River`Village` Pinot Noir 2019 (6 x 750mL), Auckland, NZ.

In 1994 we established new plantings of Pinot Noir on our Kumeu Estate with the aim of producing red wine to rival the quality of our Kumeu River Chardonnay. To this end only the best new planting material available from Burgundy was chosen, and grafted onto extremely low-vigour rootstocks to limit the yield and intensify the flavour of this wonderfully aristocratic grape variety. This Village wine is the second label to the Kumeu River label and as such display many of the distinctive Kumeu River complexities and characteristics, but are more suitable for current consumption

J. Moreau & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Already cultivated by the Gauls at the time of the Roman conquest, this important grape variety goes far back in the history of the vine in France. Mentioned for the first time under the name “Pinot Noir” in 1373, it is also known by the names of “Franc Noirien” or “Plant Fin” in the Côte d’Or, and “Franc Pinot” or “Petit Vérot” in the Yonne. It has made a reputation for itself among the red wines of Burgundy where it is vinified alone or blended with 15% Chardonnay. In Champagne, it is blended with the Chardonnay or Meunier varietals. Introduced to the Loire region in the Middle Ages at the same time as Chardonnay, it became established in the Orléanais and Touraine regions and remains the red varietal of the red and rosé wines of Sancerre.

Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

The Central Otago High Country of New Zealand is over-run with rabbits. Sheep and rabbits coexisted on the land for some time but the sheep couldn't keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits. In the end they were hopelessly outnumbered and driven off the land- they were last seen heading north. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch - Mr. MacGregor, tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population by selling rabbit pies. Eventually he decided to plant some vines and make a decent Pinot Noir to go with all the rabbit pie he was eating.

All fruit was handpicked and fermented in small open vats. Around 17% of the fruit was left as whole clusters, the rest destemmed. Fermentation occurred naturally after which the wine was drained to oak barrels to age for 11 months. Barrels and blocks were then selected for the final blend and rested in tank for several months prior to bottling.

Hand and Selective Machine Harvest, cold soaked for 4-6 days. Wines were fermented using indigenous yeasts. Total skin time was 16-29 days. Aged for 10 months in French oak hogsheads. This wine didn’t receive fining and was filtered prior to bottling in late March.

Vintage Conditions

The 2013/14 growing season began with one of the hottest starts on record until the end of December, with rapid even growth, a good flowering and subsequent fruit set. Then through to the end of February was cooler than average with the vineyards achieving good berry development.
