Zilzie Mystery Export Merlot 2018 (6 x 750mL) SEA

Zilzie Mystery Export Merlot 2018 (6 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0056-2487377

WINEMAKING

Premium parcels of Merlot fruit were fermented in rotary and static fermenters. Following fermentation on skins for seven to ten days, they were gently pressed. The wine was matured in French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. VINTAGE A mild spring followed by a classic warm and dry summer lead to outstanding quality across all varieties in Vintage 2018. These mild and dry conditions, whilst shaping exceptional fruit, saw a slight reduction in volume crushed than in previous years. Our vineyard and winemaking teams have worked passionately throughout Vintage 2018 to craft amazing wines with great colour, and flavour intensity that will enrich life’s everyday moments. Commissioners Block Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0020-2487377

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (271633-3)

McGuigan Black Label Cabernet Merlot 2016 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0030-2487377

CABERNET MERLOT 2016

Rich, generous and approachable, the McGuigan Black Label range is your contemporary guide to Australia's most popular wine varieties. Whether it be a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, a full-bodied Chardonnay or Australia's #1 selling bottled red wine, McGuigan Black Label Red, every bottle of McGuigan Black Label is packed full of varietal flavour, proving that you need not be a connoisseur to enjoy the wine of your choice for any occasion. VINTAGE CONDITIONS The fruit for this wine was sourced from our vineyards in South Eastern Australia. The climate is hot with high evaporation rates and generally low rainfall, making irrigation essential. The climate is also continental, resulting in long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights. Long sunshine hours ensure fruit ripens fully and low relative humidity results in little incidence of disease. WINEMAKING This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, full-flavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from our various dry and irrigated vineyards and was harvested at night. The grapes were fermented at cool temperatures for a period of 5-7 days. This allows the fruit flavours to be nurtured and entables retention of varietal characteristics. After fermentation, the wine was matured in stainless steel tanks and oak prior to final blending. (272326-4)

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0048-2487377

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (270745-10)

Penthouse Merlot 2013 (12 x 750mL) Paso Robles, California

Lot No: 0033-2487377

Vintage Conditions

Weather conditions were mild during summer, with a few short periods of hot weather. Generally, conditions during the majority of the ripening period were ideal, with mild day time temperatures and cold nights, all conducive to excellent flavour development and the retention of natural acidity in the fruit. A great vintage! Winemaking Picked in the cool of the morning and open top fermented. Hand plunged 3-4 times a day to extract rich colour and a complex mid-palate. Matured for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Penthouse Wines is a collaboration between John Crossland of the Central Coast of California, and Randal Tomich of South Australia. Their winemaking partnership is world class. All wines are made in the vineyard. Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Smith & Hooper `Reserve` Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), SA.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

More vigorous canopy growth during bud development in 2011, ensured fewer bunches per vine and lighter bunch weights for the 2012 vintage effectively dropping yield rates 35 - 50%. For the most part, growing conditions were optimal right through the growing season with a few temperature and rainfall events which caused some anxiety. Immediately following the high temperatures was some cool weather and a large rain event which slowed down ripening and allowed the vintage to progress at a good rate.

Giesen Merlot 2018 (6 x 750mL) Hawkes Bay New Zealand

Winemaking

Fruit harvested from four vineyards, picked at optimum ripeness. Short pre-ferment maceration for colour and flavour extraction followed by a five to seven day ferment period. The wine was gently pressed offf the skins 2 days after ferment was complete, then inoculated for Malolactic Fermentation. The wine was rested on oak to add broadness and body to the wine. Minimal finings were used, before a gentle filtration.

Vintage Conditions

Hawke’s Bay experienced an excellent flowering season, with only moderate frost risk to marginal vineyards. The following summer was hot and dry. Three rain events just before harvest affected the harvest minimally, as they were followed by periods of high wind to dry the conditions out. The fruit showed opulence and balance when it was picked at optimum ripeness.

Dandelion Vineyards Damsel of Barossa Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL) SA

Dandelion Vineyards is a unique fusion of vineyards and vignerons. Our wines represent decades of experience, blending the fruit of our old vine gardens with the finest traditions of artisan winemaking.Dandelion Vineyards are proven plantings that have stood the test of time. Our wish is to nurture the unique character of these vineyards and express their terroir in our wines. Capturing variety, vintage and vineyard requires an enlightened approach and although our growers see the Devil in every weed, we encourage the humble Dandelion amongst the vines as they suppress winter weeds, provide mulch in summer, and proffer their Wishing Clocks in spring to blow off to make our wish come true.Sourced from our old vine Barossa vineyard, these ancient, gnarled vines are not only surviving but thriving on their own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet. In March we hand harvested whole bunches of flavour ripe Merlot to be gently crushed and naturally fermented in open fermenters for eight days, hand plunged twice a day, before careful basket pressing into older French and American Oak Barriques to finish fermentation. After 18 months maturation and a racking in the same oak, we bottled without filtration or fining to capture the essence of the vineyard and although ready to drink this Damsel will reward cellaring and decanting.
