Stoneleigh `Latitude` Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

The Stoneleigh Latitude range heralds from an area in Marlborough known as the 'Golden Mile'. This 'Golden Mile' is a fertile strip of land covered with ancient riverstones and is highly regarded for its outstanding grape-growing conditions. The resulting wines are aromatically lifted, as well as riper in spectrum, a result of higher concentration of the stones in the area and the effect these have on the vines.

Louis Max Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.
Louis Max Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Louis Max, of Russian origin, founded his wine house in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1859. During the first half of the 20th century, the house of Louis Max enjoyed widespread acclaim and recognition for outstanding quality in the range of wines produced. The house has always retained a family structure and today, Laurent Max, great-grandson of founder Louis Max, together with a motivated team, has doted itself with all the means of success. The house owns or operates over eighty-seven hectare, or two hundred and fifty acres of Burgundy vineyard. The eccentric Laurent Max has invested heavily in the vinification facilities in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and, more importantly has installed the young and passionate Brigitte Putzu as head winemaker at Louis Max. Brigitte has spent over sixteen years at Louis Max, formerly as assistant winemaker, and has a long relationship with the 87 hectares of vineyards and clos that Louis Max controls. Brigitte’s wines illustrate her meticulousness in their ripeness, purity and balance. Since the 1996 harvest, Brigitte has had complete control of vineyard management and vinification for Louis Max. No single vineyard is harvested without Brigitte’s nod – only when ripeness is perfect both technically and physiologically.

A terrific start to the growing season for Pinot Noir resulted in full crops and the potential for a great season. Although late season rain did strike Marlborough, much of the Pinot Noir was harvested before these events, ensuring fruit was still in excellent condition. Fruit for this wine was harvested from March 29th through until April 11th 2017 predominantly out of Marlborough’s clay rich Southern Valleys.

Vista Bodega Pinot Noir 2018 (12 x 750mL), Chile

Lot No: 0035-2476857

Chile's unique geographical and climatic conditions offer it many advantages for wine production. The country is very long and thin - some 4500 km, yet it is only on average 150km wide, with the land sandwiched between the high, snow-capped Ands Mountain range and cold Pacific Ocean. The water temperature of Pacific is kept significantly colder by the Humbolt Current that flows up the Chilean coastline from Antarctica. The climate and soil conditions are almost perfect for grape growing;the influence and close proximity of cold air from the Andes and cool sea breezes cannot be overemphasised. Rainfall is restricted predominantly to the winter months, and snow-melt from the Andes provides unlimited pure water for the vineyard irrigation. These benign conditions and absence of phylloxera prevent many vine diseases.Because of the temperate climate and sharp day-night temperature variations, the ripening season may be several weeks longer than normal, allowing grapes to ripen more evenly and with greater fruit concentration and skin pigmentation - often resulting in higher level of antioxidants. Now Chile has become one of the world's prime resources of varietal wine. Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Central Otago, NZ.

The Central Otago High Country of New Zealand is over-run with rabbits. Sheep and rabbits coexisted on the land for some time but the sheep couldn't keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits. In the end they were hopelessly outnumbered and driven off the land- they were last seen heading north. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch - Mr. MacGregor, tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population by selling rabbit pies. Eventually he decided to plant some vines and make a decent Pinot Noir to go with all the rabbit pie he was eating.

Nautilus Estate Pinot Noir 2016 (6 x 750mL) Marlborough, NZ

Winemakers Notes

The 2016 Nautilus Pinot Noir is dark ruby in colour. The nose reveals lifted floral aromas, ripe wild blackberries, cherries and spices. The palate is medium bodied with good structure. Refined and balanced, this elegant wine shows good intensity and a lengthy finish. Vintage Prior to Christmas all the talk was about drought. Fruit set was good but would we have enough water to get through the season and what effect would this have on bunch size. Certainly the river was low. But of course Mother Nature intervened and a couple of timely rains in January during the critical phase when the berries size up meant that a crop that was looking average at best ended up above average in size. A key feature this year was lower acidity (by normal Marlborough standards), bright fruit flavours and a nice mineral texture across all the wines. Winemaking To make this wine, fruit from Pinot Noir clones 114, 115, 5, 667, 777 and Abel was hand harvested and de-stemmed without crushing to allow a portion of whole berries in the ferment. A small amount of whole bunch fruit was also included in some ferments (average 18% whole bunch). The grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast in open top fermenters after a 6-8 day ‘cold soak’. Careful cap management, using our pneumatic punch down device, has resulted in extraction of only the soft ripe tannins. After pressing the wine was racked directly to a mixture of new and older French oak Barriques, where it remained undisturbed until filtration and bottling in March 2017.

J. Moreau & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.
J. Moreau & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), France.

Already cultivated by the Gauls at the time of the Roman conquest, this important grape variety goes far back in the history of the vine in France. Mentioned for the first time under the name “Pinot Noir” in 1373, it is also known by the names of “Franc Noirien” or “Plant Fin” in the Côte d’Or, and “Franc Pinot” or “Petit Vérot” in the Yonne. It has made a reputation for itself among the red wines of Burgundy where it is vinified alone or blended with 15% Chardonnay. In Champagne, it is blended with the Chardonnay or Meunier varietals. Introduced to the Loire region in the Middle Ages at the same time as Chardonnay, it became established in the Orléanais and Touraine regions and remains the red varietal of the red and rosé wines of Sancerre.

A blend from all three of our vineyard sites, Rachel is named after Michael Seresin’s mother. The vines are cropped to produce enough fruit for just one bottle per vine, and this fruit is handpicked and completely destemmed before being fermented with wild yeast. The nose exhibits aromas of black cherry, truffle and chocolate. The palate is concentrated and full, with a dense core of rich fruit, alongside savoury spice and herbal notes, all underpinned by silky-fine and mouth coating tannins. Long on the finish, with a cleansing acidity, this is a poised, yet powerful wine.Certified organic and biodynamically grownSuitable for vegetarians and vegansNo dairy products or eggs used during production

Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.
Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2016 (12 x 750mL), Marlborough, NZ.

All fruit was handpicked and fermented in small open vats. Around 17% of the fruit was left as whole clusters, the rest destemmed. Fermentation occurred naturally after which the wine was drained to oak barrels to age for 11 months. Barrels and blocks were then selected for the final blend and rested in tank for several months prior to bottling.
