Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2017 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2017 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0052-2484673

Vintage

Following one of the coldest and wettest winters on record, a cooler than average growing season commenced later than normal with bud burst in mid September. Overall the summer was cooler than average, however a nice November and early December saw sunshine and warmer weather provide perfect conditions for flowering which resulted in excellent fruit set. Observing the lateness of the season and and the potentially high yields, the vineyard team commenced an extensive crop thinning program in January, pre-véraison. Late summer and early autumn were also slightly cooler and wetter than average, resulting in a delayed start to harvest. Our first harvest for the vintage was Chardonnay which was handpicked on 28 February, some three weeks later than a "normal" season. Chardonnay was steadily harvested during the first two weeks in March. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chenin Blanc followed immediately afterwards and, all of the fruit reaped the benefits of the cooler season, showing excellent concentration of flavours with nicely balanced acidity. The vines appreciated the milder ripening weather with no excessive heat, allowing intense varietal characters to develop with excellent freshness, vibrancy and purity. Vineyard The fruit for our 2017 Chenin Blanc is sourced from two Estate vineyard blocks. The main vineyard contributing to the wine is Weightmans Block 1 which displays excellent early flavour development ensuring good natural acidity. The vineyard soils are typically gravelly loams with a stony clay subsoil with excellent drainage and good moisture holding capacity, producing vines with exceptional balance. All the vines are carefully hand-pruned, shoot thinned and are cultivated to a target yield of ten tonnes per hectare. (270471-1)

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Vineyard The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon fruit was harvested from five separate blocks between 15 and 21 March. The vines are all planted on gravelly loam soils with different aspects and microclimates offering slightly different flavour profiles. The Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are planted mainly to Clone 1, which is perfect for this style of wine, offering crunchy, lifted tropical fruit aromas and flavours. The Semillon contributes strong citrus elements, and provides palate weight and structure to the wine. The Semillon component was sourced from our North Block 10 vineyard which was planted in 1995. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding fruit with great flavour intensity. All the vines are hand-pruned, shoot-thinned and yields are regulated to a target of ten tonnes per hectare, which ensures consistency from season to season. (270471-2)

Amelia Park `Reserve` Chardonnay 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

The fruit is hand picked early in the morning to retain freshness, then placed into the cool-room to chill further overnight. The next morning, the whole bunches are tipped into the press. The free run juice is gently pressed off to a stainless steel holding tank and allowed to settle naturally overnight. The slightly cloudy juice is then racked to a mixture of new, second and third use French oak barrels.Fermentation occurs spontaneously and completed via wild fermentation. Once primary fermentation is concluded the wine is sulfured to ensure freshness and that secondary fermentation does not take place. The wine is aged for nine months in barrel, with occasional stirring of lees to gain complexity and texture prior to bottling.

Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

The signature Cabernet Sauvignon of Vasse Felix. Crafted from Vasse Felix’s premier sections of Wilyabrup Cabernet, with the finest gravel loam soils, best clone, aspect and access to the cooling ocean breeze. It was the first red wine produced in Margaret River and has been made every year since 1972. This wine’s distinctive style possesses all the hallmarks of the finest Wilyabrup Cabernet.VINTAGE DESCRIPTION2017 was a cooler and later vintage than the previous 10 years; a year of elegant, perhaps slightly lighter bodied wines, though ripe in flavour, vibrant and very perfumed. Higher than average yields in combination with a cooler season contributed to delayed ripening of the fruit and good acid retention. Some timely warmth and sunshine occurred throughout January, although February temperatures remained moderate with some rainfall. With the cooler weather, canopy management and fruit thinning was imperative to mitigate disease pressures and allow for even, persistent ripening. There was a warm start to March to finish the white harvest, followed by the driest April since 1982, finishing the reds beautifully.
