Brokenwood `Graveyard Vineyard` Shiraz 2017 (3 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Scooping the pool at the 2015 Hunter Valley Wine Show with 5 trophies is a massive achievement. Tasting the wine it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise and is it as good as the 1998 and 1986? Time will tell but it is a very, very good Shiraz.Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick Semillon on the 8th of January and Shiraz one month later.Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals earlypicking except vintage 2014 which was not too dissimilar to 2000, except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar levels. An effortless high quality vintage for the winemakers.

Lot No: 0048-2482920

Picked from the vines yielding less than two tonnes to the acre grown on the red basalt soil of Broke Fordwich from some of the oldest Verdelho vines planted in Australia. The grapes for this wine were picked in two batches from the same vineyard. The first batch was picked slightly less ripe displaying citrus and green apple characters, and the second batch with riper tropical fruits. The wine was handled without any oxidation and fermented using aromatic yeast. The wine had minimal lees contact and no oak handling. It was bottled early to seal in the fresh fruit character of the wine. (269193-1)

Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Semillon 2014 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley
Tyrrell's `Stevens Single Vineyard` Semillon 2014 (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley

The Stevens “Glenoak” vineyard is situated on a combination of light sand and red clay soils. The vineyard is dry grown with the earliest plantings being 1911.A semi-mature Hunter Semillon with a prominent citrus fruit profile. This wine already shows all the characteristics of a semi mature Hunter Semillon, with its wonderful balance between youth and age. A core of citrus fruit, with the palate just starting to fill out with some bottle age and the acidity beginning to soften into what is a seamlessly structured wine.THE STORY OF THE SINGLE VINEYARD RANGEThe same soil, same rainfall and same temperatures of a single vineyard produce a consistency of flavour throughout the wine. Our Single Vineyard wines are only made in years when nature contrives to produce fruit of such outstanding quality that our winemakers will set parcels aside to be separately bottled. In 1993, Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal with the Stevens family to use two of their iconic vineyards. It was, and still is, a deal sealed by a handshake. With some planted in 1867, these may be the oldest producing vines in the Hunter.

Tyrrell's Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW
Tyrrell's Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW

Made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir predominantly from a vineyard purchased in 1982 that was replanted to Chardonnay in the early 1990s. This vineyard was selected for sparkling wine production as it gets its flavours early at low sugars, and with a natural acid balance. The grapes were harvested at night at 10 baume, gently pressed to ensure minimal colour pick up, and then fermented in stainless steel at approximately 16 degrees for two weeks.Following primary fermentation the wine was left in tank with lees for four months prior to bottling, and the second ferment. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the two major varieties for sparkling wine, and the nose has fine yeast and biscuit dough aromas whilst the palate has plenty of crisp Chardonnay flavour and a light crack yeast character. To suit the style the Tyrrell’s family enjoys, it has creamy texture, generous fruit and fresh acid on the finish to balance and refresh the palate.

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.
