Lot No: 0047-2476359

The Hope Estate winery, with about 100 acres of vineyards, is located in the vicinity of the village of Broke in the Lower Hunter Valley. It was created in 1994 by pharmacist Michael Hope, who abandoned his profession to devote himself entirely to wines. The fruit of this wine comes from vineyards in the Hunter Valley on basaltic soil, near the Wollemi mountain range. The company also owns vineyards in the states of Victoria and Western Australia. The Three Steps line celebrates the oenologist's work from the vineyard, past the winery, to the table of the connoisseur. (265190-4)

Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW
Tyrrell's `Vat 6` Pinot Noir 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW

This wine region is made up of the upper Hunter and lower Hunter, and is linked by the Hunter River. Settlement commenced in the Hunter Valley region in 1826. In the 20th century, expansion occurred slowly until the boom period of the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of the vineyards in the lower Hunter are situated on the extreme southern side of what is a broad and relatively flat valley nestled into the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The terrain is gently to markedly undulating, bordered to the north, west and south-west by the Great Dividing Range. The summer climate in the Hunter is humid, with high cloud cover and high rainfall. A break in the Great Dividing Range allows summer sea breezes to penetrate the valley. Rainfall is often highest just prior to and during harvest in February. The vintage period is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia with harvest commencing in late January in the lower Hunter. Yields are generally low so grape quality is good, and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and the semillon and shiraz grapes for which the area is justly renowned. With our first plantings in 1879, Pokolbin remains the home of Tyrrell’s vineyards and has become recognised as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land and the basis for development of our premium wines.

Quality Hunter Semillon in its youth is recognised for a seamless and impeccable balance of tight fruit flavour and fruit acid. While they are pleasant as young wines, the intensity of this relationship is the foundation on what observations may be made on a Semillon's ageing potential. It is the character Semillon builds as it ages in bottle that places this particular variety in a unique category all of its own.

Brokenwood Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL), Hunter Valley, NSW.

he Hunter Valley has a long history of wet years being followed immediately by scorchers, 1997 – 1998, 2002 – 2003, and 2004 – 2005. The feature of these years is the previous year has a wet autumn, dry winter followed by a very hot summer. Another feature is the very high quality of Shiraz. We had 95% of our Shiraz picked before the extreme heat of the weekend 10th to 12th February 2017 that saw the temperature hit 44, 47 and 45C over the three-day period. Staff and vines survived and this is the first release of a wonderful collection of 2017 Hunter Valley Shiraz wines from Brokenwood. All are characterised by deep colour and lifted ripe fruit.

Tyrrell's Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV (6 x 750mL) Hunter Valley, NSW

Made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir predominantly from a vineyard purchased in 1982 that was replanted to Chardonnay in the early 1990s. This vineyard was selected for sparkling wine production as it gets its flavours early at low sugars, and with a natural acid balance. The grapes were harvested at night at 10 baume, gently pressed to ensure minimal colour pick up, and then fermented in stainless steel at approximately 16 degrees for two weeks.Following primary fermentation the wine was left in tank with lees for four months prior to bottling, and the second ferment. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the two major varieties for sparkling wine, and the nose has fine yeast and biscuit dough aromas whilst the palate has plenty of crisp Chardonnay flavour and a light crack yeast character. To suit the style the Tyrrell’s family enjoys, it has creamy texture, generous fruit and fresh acid on the finish to balance and refresh the palate.
