The fruit was harvested in the cool of night to preserve freshness and quality. Individual batches were cool fermented in stainless steel on French oak followed by lees stirring to give length and roundness to the palate. The wine was blended, stabilised and filtered prior to bottling. VINTAGE The vintage 2019 growing season was one of the driest on record. Controlled winter watering and careful monitoring of vine stress levels was key to a successful crop. Temperatures tended to be cooler in spring and early summer which caused a slower start to the season, as temperatures began to rise in late Jan early Febripening moved along a little quicker and the team were grateful the vines had sufficient canopies to protect the fruit through to maturity. The reds from this vintage show excellent depth of colour and fabulous tannins, whilst the whites display a rich array of aromatics and bright fresh fruit flavours. (270295-2)

Lot No: 0007-2484612

Winemaking

The 2019 vintage endured some extended heat and dryness which resulted in lower than average yields, concentrated flavour and minimal disease risk. Harvested in three different stages, destemmed and must chilled into bag presses to gently extract the fresh fruity flavours. Clarified and fermented under controlled temperatures between 12 to 18 c. Extended lees contact was conducted to achieve soft rich mouthfeel then oaked in both American and French barrels until bottling. Celebrating over 50 years and three generations, with the strength of our heritage we honour the generations past and yet to come. These Byrne Family wines deliver richness and complexity in classic varietal style. Thomson Estate Lookout Ridge Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0045-2484612

FRUIT

This Chardonnay was grown on mature vines with an average of 40 years on limestone soils. The result is a wine with lively fruit intensity and good acid balance. The 2019 vintage was hotter and lower yielding than usual and picked in three distinctly different parcels of ripeness. Layered complexity of green apple/citrus, peach and tropical diversity are in a refreshing and vibrant style. WINEMAKING The richness of the fruit in its natural state meant that minimal intervention was required in the winery. Separate parcels were left on skins for some time in order to develop the keen tannin structure, then fermented in stainless steel with some French oak influence. 1838 was the year Walter Thomson, with wife Jane, arrived in Australia and established a winemaking tradition. Faithful to his approach, our estate grown parcels are carefully tended by our vignerons to create wines of great intensity. Glorious vantage lookouts along the cliffs of the beautiful River Murray can be enjoyed near our mature vineyards. (267937-3)

WINEMAKING

With a wine like this our winemaking is all about retention of the fantastic natural fl avours of the grapes.Cool temperatures are a key to this and hence we pick late at night to harvest the grapes as cold as possible. Following harvest the grapes were transported to the winery and pressed immediately using modern membrane tank presses. After cold settling the clear juice was carefully racked and inoculated with selected yeasts. Cool fermentation was followed by minimal handling fi ltration and bottling at the Angove Family winery. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove family’s own Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the Riverland region. Winemaking

The 2018 weather conditions were mild and very dry. This allowed the fruit to mature evenly, providing perfect harvesting options with lower yields to the 2017 vintage. Picked in three tranches, this delivered three distinctly different parcels of ripeness and ultimately a layered complexity and acidity. The first pick is to produce a backbone of Citrus, tight crisp acid and length. The second pick is to deliver the stone fruit components as peach, nectarine and pear. The last pick is to smooth out the palate with a little more from the riper fruit. The third pick also adds the Honeydew and tropical fruit elements, especially on the palate. Selected French oak is introduced towards the end of vinification, to embrace and complete the total blend.Byrne Family Australia wines express our family’s dedication to the land and our vines. MATURATION

Oak maturation, malolactic fermentation and stirring on lees. WINEMAKERS NOTES The Silex vineyard is located at Kongorong, some 80 kilometres South of Coonawarra in the Mount Gambier geographical region. The district has been famous for quite some time for its cheddar cheese. It also has a small and very specialized grapegrowing community. Its proximity to the Southern Ocean and the cold afternoon/evening sea breezes that blow most days during the growing season make it one of the coolest places in Australia to grow grapes. This coolness results in a slow extended ripening period delivering high natural acidity and delicate fruit characters. Silex is a term used in Europe to describe flint or chert rock. The weathered limestone at this site has an extremely hard flint-like cap and only a shallow layer of red clay/loam soil for the vine roots to exploit. This and the weather make viticulture a real challenge. The use of oak and malolactic bacteria have given the wine complexity and richness. Oak adds extra aromas/flavours and malo also adds texture to the palate.Time in the bottle will see the current tight structure loosen and become even more flavoursome. Plantagenet Three Lions Chardonnay 2018 (12 x 750mL), Great Southern, WA.

The Plantagenet’s were the first truly armigerous royal dynasty of England meaning they were entitled to strike and bear various coats of arms. The arms of this noble, later royal, family, Gules, three lions passant guardant, termed colloquially "the arms of England" were first adopted by King Richard the Lionheart (1189–1199), son of King Henry II of England (1154–1189), son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou (1113/17–1151).These Three Lions signified royalty, history, power and a code of conduct that was instantly recognized wherever they were displayed. So too with this range of wines. They are from the oldest established winery in Great Southern – they are wines with power and provenance. The Three Lion coat of arms of Plantagenet Wines is a recognized symbol of quality and prestige.

Kellybrook Yarra Chardonnay 2017 (12x 750mL). Yarra Valley, VIC
Kellybrook Yarra Chardonnay 2017 (12x 750mL). Yarra Valley, VIC

Kellybrook was established in 1962 and has quietly gone about making lovely wines and cider from their property in Wonga Park. In June 2011 Rob Hall joined the team after spending almost 10 years at Mount Mary. He was keen to spread his wings and try some new and interesting things with wines and introduced the Estate range wines. Made exclusively from fruit from the vineyard in Wonga Park and they are something special for sure. I have no doubt in saying the Estate range of wines will be considered classics of the Yarra in a few years time. We will focus on the Estate wines but will also include a few of the other Kellybrook range too

Sticks Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL), Yarra Valley, VIC.

The Yarra Valley Chardonnay is exceptional value and definitely worth trying. Lemon, white peach, nectarine and grapefruit are the key players here, with a support cast of nougat, toast and flint. A touch of oak helps build complexity and length. Great with a relaxed meal of roast chicken and salad.

Moates Lane Chardonnay 2017 (12x 750mL). Pyreness, VIC

VINTAGE NOTES

A relatively cool summer made for one of the best vintages for many years with harvest taking place weeks later than usual and the slower ripening providing more time for flavour development and more intensely flavoured grapes.WINEMAKINGThe grapes were machine harvested, crushed, destemmed and pressed into. Fermentation took place over 12 days with selected yeast to enhance both full flavour development and some complexity. The wine was kept on lees contact for a further 2 months before being racked and stabilized (protein and tartrate), carefully blended and prepared for bottling.

Which Way Is Up Chardonnay 2018 (12x 750mL).

Eric is a moose. Eric stood up one day pondering the question 'which way is up?' Then all of a sudden Eric had an epiphany... If one has their hooves on the ground (The moose is not renowned for its flying ability) and one wishes to move i any direction, one just firstly lift up ones hoof. So therefore, it stands to reason that 'every way is up'; so jump up, jump up, jump around.
