Mitolo 7th Son Grenache Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Mitolo 7th Son Grenache Shiraz 2013 (6 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Lot No: 0021-2481278

STYLE

Seventh Son Grenache Shiraz is quite a different wine for Mitolo and a commitment to the McLaren Vale region and its most revered varieties. The Grenache portion, sourced from old bush vines off the sands of Blewitt Springs, provides rustic, lighter, earthier flavours than the fruit forward, softer Shiraz portion sourced from the Lopresti vineyards. When blended together though these opposites provide a great foil for each other, creating a complex and intriguing wine. There is very little new oak influence in this wine, with older oak barrels chosen for the elevage. The tannins are sandy, almost gritty, helped along by the tiny dollop of Sagrantino, a littleItalian twist on a classic blend from southern France and McLaren Vale. This is a wine made more in the earthy style of the wines of my European heritage, yet still speaks loudly of place, McLaren vale, with its generosity and purity. VINEYARD The Grenache is sourced from the northern part of McLaren Vale known as Blewitt Springs where the soil is deep sand. This vineyard of old gnarly bush vines is dry grown and farmed with minimal input. It is a significantly cooler site than where the Shiraz and Sagrantino parcels are sourced: the Mitolo Lopresti vineyard found about 30km to the south on the clay flatlands near the beach. The cooler conditions and sandy soil give the Grenache wine big fragrance and firm structure. The Shiraz offers a juxtaposition of style with the warmer conditions and heavy clay soil giving a richness and soft structure that are an ideal foil for the Grenache. VINIFICATION The Shiraz and Grenache parcels were kept separate until the final blending stage just prior to bottling. Both parcels were destemmed without crushing then pumped over once daily. The ferment was kept cool throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters that are a signature for Mitolo. The wine was kept in one and two year old barrels, all of French origin, for 18 months before being blended. We added just a tiny amount of Sagrantino to the final blend, also from the Lopresti vineyard, to enhance the structure of the wine. The final blend was clarified by racking only, and bottled without fining or filtration. (268555-2)

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Saltbush Merlot 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0039-2481278

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (267920-10)

The wine was matured on French oak for 6 months before blending and bottling, the resulting wine has excellent depth of colour, richness and complexity. Vintage - The wet spring followed by a mild summer lead to a later and compressed harvest for all varieties this year. Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase both colour and flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting the Merlot grapes were crushed into static fermenters and inoculated with AWRI yeast. Controlled fermentation occurred over six days, commencing at 24°C reducing to 20°C. Gentle Pump-overs occurred four times daily to maximise the extraction of colour whilst still retaining a soft juicy palate structure. Pump-overs were reduced to twice daily towards the end of fermentation to minimise seed tannin extraction. To avoid any harsh tannins and bitterness only free run and first pressings were used in this blend. After pressing the wines were settled before racking onto French oak for 3 months. (268502-3)

Following on from a wet winter, spring and summer were hot, with late budburst. The vines ripened throughout February and harvest began in March. The vines held large canopies with average yields. Bodega Merlot 2017 (12 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Lot No: 0002-2481278

Vintage

2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varieties. Winemaking Grapes were harvested at optium ripeness. Fermentation in open topped vessels with traditional pump over cap management has produced a wine with loads of fruit flavours and soft tannins providing structure without astringency. Maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months adds further complexity and structure without dominating the fruit. (265269-1)

Lot No: 0005-2481278

I rediscovered the nobility and stunning complexity of Merlot almost by accident when I came across this single vineyard high in the Barossa ranges near Mount Crawford. The climate is extremely cool and late ripening, allowing the fruit to develop multi-dimensional flavour and sophistication. Great Merlot is being snapped up by a new wave of drinkers looking for strength with elegance and finesse. (268770-2)

Vintage detail

- Warm & dry conditions in December and January saw good fruit set and subsequent yields in some early varieties. February & March rainfall was high, and fruit ripening was slow for late ripening varieties. However, our free draining soil, vine management & selective harvesting ensured good quality in return.Harvested from our Gimblett Gravels vineyard. Tank fermented on skins with regular pumping over to extract good colour and optimum flavours. Matured in seasoned barriques and then blended to add fruit expression. (267895-4)

La Resistance! Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2016 (6 x 750mL) Barossa

Lot No: 0015-2481278

Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourvèdre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel. Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston. The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourvèdre. This is definitely a Grenache-driven GSM! Subtle seasoned oak and caramel lead to a deep-fruited, dark cherry and strawberry palate with supple fine-grain tannin. Gentle refreshing acidity gives great line and drives the brooding and delicious fruit through to a lingering finish. (262783-2)
