Port Phillip Estate Estate Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL), Mornington Pen.

The Port Phillip Estate vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Red Hill, on Eocene volcanic soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.VintageFollowing a wet Winter, budburst commenced relatively late in mid-September. The Winter rainfall set up the vineyards well for Spring with overall temperatures during Spring slightly higher than average accompanied by below average rainfall. Flowering commenced mid late November with ideal weather conditions, resulting in one of the best fruit sets in many years. The mild to warm conditions continued throughout Summer andveraison commenced in mid-January. Harvest delivered fruitful crop loads matched with very stable weather conditions, ensuring vine performance and good ripeness. Picking commenced late February and the viticultural team worked steadily until the beginning of April delivering outstanding fruit. The white winesdisplay excellent acidity, depth and intense fruit flavours. The red wines look poised and elegant with powerful aromatics and a great balance between tannin and acid.

Cape Barren `Native Goose` Chardonnay 2017 (12 x 750mL), Adelaide Hills, SA

After harvesting in the very cool early morning, the grapes were destemmed without crushing, direct into the press. Gentle pressing allowed extraction of the prime juice, whilst still maintaining the delicacy and elegance. Fermentation proceeded in stainless steel tank with about half of the solids retained until about the mid-point of sugar conversion, when the juice was then filled to French oak Hogsheads to complete fermentation. Lees stirring was performed weekly for 3 months, and 30% of the wine underwent Malo-Lactic fermentation. The wine was matured in the same oak barrels for 8 months before filtration and bottling

Silex Chardonnay 2018 (12 x 750mL) Mount Gambier GI

Lot No: 0046-2487211

MATURATION

Oak maturation, malolactic fermentation and stirring on lees. WINEMAKERS NOTES The Silex vineyard is located at Kongorong, some 80 kilometres South of Coonawarra in the Mount Gambier geographical region. The district has been famous for quite some time for its cheddar cheese. It also has a small and very specialized grapegrowing community. Its proximity to the Southern Ocean and the cold afternoon/evening sea breezes that blow most days during the growing season make it one of the coolest places in Australia to grow grapes. This coolness results in a slow extended ripening period delivering high natural acidity and delicate fruit characters. Silex is a term used in Europe to describe flint or chert rock. The weathered limestone at this site has an extremely hard flint-like cap and only a shallow layer of red clay/loam soil for the vine roots to exploit. This and the weather make viticulture a real challenge. The use of oak and malolactic bacteria have given the wine complexity and richness. Oak adds extra aromas/flavours and malo also adds texture to the palate.Time in the bottle will see the current tight structure loosen and become even more flavoursome. Toasty bottle age will add complexity if you can resist the temptation for 3 to 5 years in the cellar. (270334-7)

Tertini International Chardonnay 2016 (6 x 750mL) Tumbarumba, NSW

Lot No: 0047-2487211

Tertini International Chardonnay 2016 (6 x 750mL) Tumbarumba, NSWThis wine is lean and elegant with a pale straw colour. The bouquet features white peach with toasty vanillin. The palate shows excellent depth of melons with zesty acidity. Some creaminess has been contributed from partial barrel fermentation and further maturation in French oak with occasional batonnage. Bottled after 8 months in oak.The fruit for this wine was grown especially for Tertini Wines in the Tumbarumba region of New South Wales. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 650m and has basalt volcanic soils. This vineyard has a long slow ripening period from its cool nights to ensure our fruit is grown with the richness, aromatic development and balance that this region is renowned for. Vintage & Winemaking Notes - An early budburst and early strong growth was followed by warm temperatures through late Spring and early Summer resulting in an excellent flowering and fruit set. A wetter than usual Spring/Summer led onto a dry Autumn which was ideal to keep disease pressures low as the fruit ripened. The winter rains from 2015 ensured a healthy crop load with intense varietal character but with moderate acidity. (SN:269843-2) (269843-4)

Thomson Estate Lookout Ridge Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0048-2487211

FRUIT

This Chardonnay was grown on mature vines with an average of 40 years on limestone soils. The result is a wine with lively fruit intensity and good acid balance. The 2019 vintage was hotter and lower yielding than usual and picked in three distinctly different parcels of ripeness. Layered complexity of green apple/citrus, peach and tropical diversity are in a refreshing and vibrant style. WINEMAKING The richness of the fruit in its natural state meant that minimal intervention was required in the winery. Separate parcels were left on skins for some time in order to develop the keen tannin structure, then fermented in stainless steel with some French oak influence. 1838 was the year Walter Thomson, with wife Jane, arrived in Australia and established a winemaking tradition. Faithful to his approach, our estate grown parcels are carefully tended by our vignerons to create wines of great intensity. Glorious vantage lookouts along the cliffs of the beautiful River Murray can be enjoyed near our mature vineyards. (270176-8)

1 REVIEW
Lot No: 0020-2487211

Viticulture

- Trained onto two wire vertical trellises with both wires mechanically pruned back to 2 buds. The canopy is managed through reduced water to restrict its vigour and increase flavour intensity. Vinification - After night harvesting (in order to retain freshness and varietal flavour) the grapes were crushed into airbag presses and gently pressed in top two fractions, free run and –pressings. Both fractions are fined to minimise any phenolic bitterness before being clarified. The free run is then inoculated with an aromatic yeast strain designed to enhance the varietal characters of the fruit as well as build texture in to the wine during fermentation. Controlled fermentation occurred over 10-12 days, commencing at 16°C and increasing toward the end of ferment to approximately 20°C. Post ferment the wine is stirred on lees to create texture and mid palate mouth feel. Once the palate of the wine is balanced between fresh acidity and texture the wine is clarified. Post clarification the wine was aged on French oak alternatives before being stabilised. The wine is then filtered and bottled. (272038-1)

Angove Groundswell Organic Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL) SA

Angove Groundswell Organic Chardonnay 2018 (6 x 750mL) SA

Lot No: 0002-2487211

Vineyard

The grapes for this wine were sourced from Angove’s own organically certified Nanya vineyard at Paringa and certified growers in McLaren Vale.Despite a relatively dry winter, budburst was even and the timing was about on par with previous years; however, the dry soil caused many growers to water the vines earlier than normal. With dry conditions comes lack of disease pressure allowing our vineyard team to minimise the use of any mildew sprays. Dry conditions continued into January, with above average temperatures and a four day stretch in mid-January of above 40 degrees. With good canopies and careful irrigation this did not do any damage to the fruit unlike previous years. Winemaking Picked in the cool of dawn the grapes as cold as possible the grapes were transported to the winery and pressed using modern membrane tank presses. The juice was then cold settled and carefully racked to cooled fermentation tanks where it was inoculated with selected yeasts. Temperature controlled fermentation was followed by a short period on oak prior to blending and bottling. (273263-3)

Saltbush Chardonnay 2019 (12 x 750mL) SEA

Lot No: 0045-2487211

In the not so distant past inland Australia once shimmered in the scorching midday sun. Vast tracts of land were covered with a sea of grey-green foliage from the many types of saltbush plants. Saltbush derives its name from the salt that the plant retains in its leaves. Much of that land is now cleared for agricultural and horticulture including vineyards. The beauty of saltbush is that the plant is incredibly salt tolerant. They live for years and survive through all seasons throughout the year and it doesn't matter whether you get 50 points of rain in January or July, they will thrive.Herds of wild herbivores would move into a stand of saltbush and defoliate the plants as they consumed the leaves, then they moved on. In more recent times saltbush sustained the herds of introduced cattle and sheep in particular. The sheep has become an Australian icon and indeed the country, for a time, rode on the sheep’s back. Images spring to mind of Australia’s historic pastoral characters such as “Saltbush Bill” come into mind and the legend of Sir Sydney Kidman. (269344-8)
