De Bortoli `Windy Peak` Shiraz 2017 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Windy Peak wines are made at De Bortoli's Dixon's Creek winery from carefully selected fruit grown in the Yarra Valley, King Valley and other regions. The wines are generous in flavour with fine grained texture, perfect for bringing out the best in food. Fruit is sourced from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz grown on the red volcanic soils of Northern Heathcote. Fruit is harvested at 14.0-14.5 baume to achieve a balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into both static and rotary fermenters. The resultant wine is then fermented for up to two weeks on skins prior to pressing and racking. A third of the blend is matured for 5 months in older casks and the remainder stays in tank for freshness and brightness.

Penny's Hill Cracking Black' Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750ml) McLaren Vale SA

Sourced from our estate Malpas Road Vineyard, planted in 1991 on land which was originally referred to as ‘Bay of Biscay’. This is an obvious reference to the relatively infertile cracking, grey-black soil upon which our hand-tended Shiraz patch does its work. The fissures which occur as the black soil cracks apart, sever surplus root structure; a process which naturally lessens vigour and enhances ultimate grape quality. Other fruit parcels were sourced from the slightly higher elevated vines of the Penny’s Hill Vineyard. Detailed canopy management, judicious irrigation and passionate viticultural practices in both these high class vineyards contribute to this outstanding Shiraz.

Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Oxford Landing Merlot 2018 (12 x 750mL), SA.

Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Oxford Landing vineyard produces grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites to produce vines with low vigour. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality. Winemaking/Viticulture Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of 6 days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure, and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wine is stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.Winemaker’s Comments Growing conditions remained warm and dry and along with controlled irrigation of the vines, this has allowed the healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Merlot harvest commenced in the last week of February, which is right on average, and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season was one of the wettest on record, replenishing the soil moisture content and setting the vines up very well. The wet conditions were capped off by a cooler than average spring and early summer. Temperatures normalized at the start of February, with the ensuing long, cool ripening period resulting in lovely fruit flavours and natural acidity. Viticulture/ Winemaking Our Smith’s vineyard is home to some of the most exciting clones of Merlot in Australia; the Argentinean sourced 8R and Italian Q45-14. Planted in 2003 we are starting to see the fruit mature beautifully. The use of these clones combined with carefully considered viticulture and winemaking practices are the foundation of this special wine. A large portion of this wine is created by fermenting “berries in the barrel”. Three tonnes of handpicked Merlot was destemmed into French barriques without crushing the berries. Whole berry fermentation minimises the tannin extraction and creates a style of Merlot that is powerful yet generous and flavoursome without harsh tannins.Ancient and secluded, Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of terra rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance. Soft, yet full of flavour, rich and elegant. Wrattonbully Merlot captivates with its flavour, intensity and opulence. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is naturally at home within this young viticultural region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

- Founded by father and son, Oakgrove Estate is the product of more than four decades’ experience in the Australian wine industry. With the mission of sharing Australian wine with the world,Oakgrove Estate provides high quality examples of Australia’s best known varietals at an affordable price. Region - Oakgrove Estate wines are sourced from vineyards across NSW and Victoria which are in close proximity to Australia’s famous and beautiful Murray River, widely known to be the life of Australia’s food bowl. The natural creation of the river system millions of years ago in Australia has provided rich fertile soils from which these vineyards benefit. The climate in these areas provides hot summers with cold to mild winters allowing ideal growing conditions each year to produce consistent quality and fantastic wines year after year. The grapes are harvested at night as the cooler conditions help ensure that the fruit arrives in the winery in perfect condition. After cold settling, the juice was rackedand then fermented in tank using a neutral yeast to express the varietal aromas. Lot No: 0008-2474230

Generous, rich flavours ooze from this big, concentrated Shiraz. It has warm rustic charm, great length and a complex fruit, oak and tannin structure. Vintage 2014 was our first year making wine from this vineyard and we’re delighted with the results. This Shiraz has fruit intensity with sophisticated oak maturation adding elegance and refinement. Douglas Hughes As youthful enthusiasts, it was our basic love of wine and thirst for knowledge that independently led us to study at the hallowed halls of South Australia’s famed Roseworthy College … That was several decades ago and whilst we’ve taken different paths and achieved different outcomes, we’ve both decided it’s time to get back to the basics that inspired us so long ago.Together, we’ve clocked up more than 60 years working in various segments of the wine business. We’ve seen the industry mature and fashions come and go. A lot has happened since Paul Hogan started “tossing shrimps on the Barbie” but sharing some good food and nice wine with friends remains one of our constant pleasures. As an international marketer, educator and recipient of Champagne’s highest honour “Chevalier l’Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne”, Jan Douglas is no stranger to the world of fine wine, dining and travel. I started winemaking in the Barossa back in the 1980’s with traditional varieties and techniques. Combining the years of experience and knowledge with some old school values lead us to develop the Douglas Hughes “Series” range of wines. They’re full flavoured, honest wines that invoke a slice of the past and are perfect for enjoying today. (254105-8)

Overall the Great Southern saw an excellent growing season and 2014 harvest. The season was characterised initially by unseasonally strong winds leading to some slight inflorescence damage. These conditions subsided in the two weeks prior to flowering however and much of the Great Southern saw good fruit set. Moderate rainfall during the early growing season was welcome on the whole but excess moisture did provide a small amount of disease pressure. Later in the season however, the region saw particularly dry conditions with very little rainfall in the two months leading in to harvest and presenting some challenges in particular for dry grown vineyards. A typical strong diurnal effect was observed, with cold nights and warm days leading to a long, uniform slow ripening period.
