The Riesling fruit was harvested from our Langton vineyard (Mt Barker) in the first few days of March. A close eye was kept on the vineyards leading up to picking as there had been some unseasonably cool and wet days, though picking the Riesling relatively early ensured the fruit was in excellent condition with perfect analysis. Only the free run juice was selected for this Riesling and carefully fermented at cool temperatures with a selected yeast to enhance the aromatics and retain the delicate citrus and floral fruit characters. Bottled as early as possible to retain maximum freshness.

Winery Tasting Notes

Very bright & clear with a hint of a light green tinge.

A fragrant nose with subtle orange blossom characters and aromas of sweet lemon rind and hints of spicy lime.

Our ’17 Riesling is a very fine dry wine with the delicate, fresh fruit flavours typical of cool climate grown fruit while being quite well rounded with a beautiful palate weight. It has delicate flavours of lemon sherbet and sweet limes with very light floral notes. With its fresh ‘zingy’ acidity it has good length of flavour and a crisp, clean finish.

Food Match

This Riesling is approachable now and would be great as an aperitif or matched with any very fresh seafood.

It will age beautifully and will develop some gorgeous bottle age complexity over the next 5 – 10 years.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
