Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Bright with a light straw colour.

Aroma

Quite perfumed with lovely ripe melon fruit aromas predominating, especially rockmelon and honeydew. There are some white peach and nectarine characters also, which sit well with the gentle vanilla and honeyed characters from the French oak.

Palate

This is a beautifully textured Chardonnay which has a fullness to the palate while still having a delicate silky fineness. After 5 months on lees, the light, toasty oak characters are well integrated with the peachy fruit flavours. It is well weighted with a delicate acidity contributing to its good length of flavour.

Cellaring

Delicious now and will handle further cellaring, developing more buttery notes with some bottle age.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
