Overview

Elston is named for Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Charles Darwin’s family. Darwin’s ‘theory of natural selection’ forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory, the foundation of biology. The wyvern symbol of Elston Hall appears on the label.

The superb quality of the 2017 vintage was immediately apparent in the fully ripe grapes that were hand-harvested from their separate, individual plots within Te Mata Estate’s vineyards between 16 and 22 March 2017.

Expert Reviews

Elston '17 - ‘Elston is a very unique style of New Zealand chardonnay made in a reserved and clean style with subtle oak. Pretty floral and white peach fruit with understated spicy oak are followed by a crisp mid-weight, fruit-driven palate.’

Angus Hughson, ‘In The Clouds’ THE AUSTRALIAN, October 2018

Winery Tasting Notes

Elston Chardonnay ’17 is a fine, pale gold with notes of beeswax, white flowers, ripe peaches and flinty, wet, stone that flow through onto the palate. Roast almonds, hazelnuts, clover honey and warm brioche, along with this wine’s signature tight acidity, give the Elston Chardonnay ’17 incredible length, detail and finesse.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
